Tour de PEI 2007 — Stage 1

June 10, 2007 (Summerside, PEI) — Russia’s Alexandra Burchenkova (Russian Cycling Federation) won the opening 99km Stage 1, which consisted of 10 laps of 9.9 km circuit on the streets of Summerside.

During the first two laps of the race no team in the peloton seemed to be controlling the race until early in the third lap when Rochelle Gilmore (Aus) Menikini-Selle Italia-Gysko took the lead. The peloton was close behind her but more strung out at this point. During lap three Amanda Sin (Can) Advil/Chapstick fell and lost her position but no other riders seemed to be involved.

On lap 4 a group of five riders with no Canadians, broke away and gained a 100m lead. Near the end of that lap they were caught as the 5th lap was a sprint lap. Gilmore won the sprint and was followed closely by Yumari Gonzaley of the Cuban National team.

For the next several laps no breaks occurred until eight lap when Burchenkova made a solo break from the pack and gained a 1:27 lead. During the final lap the peloton made up over a minute on her but she was able to hold on for the win by 11 seconds over Gilmore in second and Giorgia Bronzini (Ita) Safi-Pasta Zara Manhattan in 3rd.
