June 9, 2007 (Charlottetown, PEI) — The first edition of Tour de PEI, International Women Cycling event, will take place from June 10-14, 2007 across Prince Edward Island. A unique event in the Maritimes sanctioned by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale), this prestigious race is comprised of five stages:
The first stage will take place on Sunday, June 10 with 10 laps of 9.9 km on the streets of Summerside. The start is at 3:30 pm.
The second stage will take place on Monday, June 11 and will feature an individual time-trial on the Confederation Bridge for a 28.8km loop from PEI to New Brunswick and back. Start time is 11 am. This event will be preceded by an amateur peloton-style race that will start at 9:15 am.
The third stage on June 12 will feature a road circuit from Cavendish looping West to Wellington and back for a total of 124 kms. The start in Cavendish (Rainbow Valley area) is at 9:30 am.
The fourth stage on June 13 will feature a road circuit starting in Dalvay, travelling through the community of Montague and finishing in Stratford.
The fifth and final stage will consist of an electrifying 50-lap, 1km criterium race in downtown Charlottetown in the Confederation Centre area on June 14. The start is at 5 pm. This stage will be preceded by a Tour de PEI Junior race which will begin at 3:30 pm.
To close the event, an outdoor concert featuring 2007 Juno Award Winner Mobile will take place at the amphitheatre of the Confederation Centre of the Arts starting at 7:30 pm on June 14. Admission is free.
The best cyclists in the world The Tour de PEI will welcome the best women cyclists in the world and will feature, for example, such teams as Getränke-Hoffmann (Germany), Giant Pro cycling (China), Menikini- Selle Italia-Gysko (Italy) as well as national teams of Australia, Russia, New Zealand and the best in Canadian athletes.
