February 1, 2007 – The Tour de Langkawi has overcome its well-documented financial woes, and is set to start tomorrow, Friday, February 2. The race, famous for its lucrative prize purse and its feared Genting Highlands stage will feature ten days of racing in Malaysia (only the very beginning of the race is actually on the small island of Langkawi) and finish with a criterium in Kuala Lumpur, host city of the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Last year’s winner David George is back to defend his title, captaining the South African national team. George will face strong challenges from last year’s runner up Francesco Bellotti of Crédit Agricole, and the pint-size José Rujano now riding for Unibet.com. Rujano, runner up in 2005, will be looking to erase a 2006 season full of drama and few results and reconfirm that he one of the hottest climbing prospects in the pro peloton.
