July 19, 2007 (Amos, QC) – Tom David (New Zealand) is used to riding solo against the clock. Despite his assertions that he’s not much of a time trialer, he has spent the majority of this year’s Tour d’Abitibi, either alone or in a small group at front of the race. Today those skills came in handy as he bested the field in the infamous 14.5km gold mine ITT on Stage 4.

An early best time was set by Devon Nowaksowski (Team Ontario) at 23:02 matched by Guilliaume Blais-Dufour (Equipe de Quebec). But as the favorites took to the course the times began to drop. Many predicted that US national time trial champion Benjamin King would impress, and he did flying to the finish with a time of 22:34. However, the remaining riders had other plans as better times were coming.

Taylor Phinney (USA National Team) piloted his bike to a time 22:11 besting eventual 3rd place finisher, Travis Burandt (Team Hotel San Jose) with a time of 22:28. Afterwards Phinney commented that time trials are usually his thing and he knew that he would ride well today and potentially put some time into some of his rivals. This he did, but with one exception.

Phinney had barely crossed the line when New Zealand phenom Tom David rode to a stellar 22:08, that stood as the best time of the day. The course was an out-and-back with wind playing a huge factor. When asked about this David remarked that it wasn’t all that bad adding that New Zealand is much worse for wind by comparison.

GC leader Stephane Cossette (Equipe de Quebec), not known for his time trial prowess, rode admirably to a time of 24:30, but it wasn’t enough to hold onto the brown leader’s jersey. Thus David took over as leader in the GC category, the points category, and the best first year junior category.

Stage 5 – Yoshida Sprints For a Surprise Win

Going into tonight’s 45-lap criterium in Amos, Quebec, many were predicting that the US National, New Zealand team, or the Equipe de Quebec team would take the win. However it was Hayato Yoshida of the Japanese National team that would prove to be victorious.

The criterium was aggressive from the gun with many riders attacking repeatedly attempting to form a move that might stay away. Following this morning’s ITT many riders were predicting a fast race. Race leader David told us that he’d came to Canada to race and wasn’t about to “just play it safe” by hiding in the pack to protect his jersey.

Guillaume Boivin, (Equipe de Quebec) looking to make up time following a 10th place ITT finish this morning remarked that he was going to fight to the very final laps in an attempt to move up in the GC rankings. USA’s Phinney was more diplomatic saying that his team was going to race the criterium just like any other race they might do — most would interpret that to mean aggressively.

Tonight’s criterium was staged a little bit differently than most with lapped riders allowed to continue racing until the final five laps at which point they would be pulled and the remaining riders would contest for the win.

This made for interesting racing as many spectators had trouble discerning which racer was on which lap. The US National team was always present at the front with riders like Phinney, Danny Summerhill, Benjamin King and Grant Van Horn patrolling the pack and launching attacks. David took a couple of flyer’s but got caught up in the traffic of lapped riders and was eventually brought back.

Equipe de Quebec and Garneau-Crocs-Ogivly Renault riders also factored into the aggressive racing sending riders off the front repeatedly. The course was a 1.4km affair with a large hill leading up to the start-finish where riders would either attack the field or be unceremoniously dropped from the peloton.

With 10 laps to go, the aggressive riding of the USA National squad finally came to fruition when they put two riders in an 11-man break that got about 10 seconds on the field. With the lapped traffic making it hard for the pack to chase, the break was able to stay away.

In an exciting sprint finish Yoshida took the win ahead of Jarno Gmelich Beijing (Holland) and Quebec’s Blais-Dufour. The rest of the field rolled in a few seconds later with the notable exception of Tom David who crashed on the final lap. Fortunately for him, officials allowed him to finish with the same time as the pack and thus he kept his lead in all the categories.
