Tour de l\’Abitibi – Stage 3 Report, Full Results and Photos

July 18, 2007 (Val d’Or, QC) – After many attempts yesterday to break away from the field, Tom David (New Zealand National) finally made good and rolled across the line first today on Stage 3, a 94.7km road race from Senneterre to Val d’Or. David was victorious after attacking a 13-man break in the finishing circuits of today’s road race.

The stage started a little bit later then normal today after yesterday’s double stage kept riders busy for much of the day. The peloton completed five circuits of the small community of Senneterre before taking to the open roads. Race leader Guillaume Boivin (Equipe de Quebec) had the misfortune of flatting on the second of the initial five laps but was able to receive a quick wheel change and catch back on before the race left town.

The opening kilometers were fast and nervous as riders attacked attempting to establish a break. At first a large 22-man group formed but with no USA national team members present the move was brought back in short order. Riders continued down the relatively flat roads towards Val d’Or with the only major obstacles on course being the very rough conditions of the road.

For a stretch of about 10 kilometers the race radio was unable to pass on the progress of a break, as they were too busy relaying messages to teams whose riders had flatted and were in need of assistance.

When the “flatting contest” subsided we found out that David and Stephane Cossette (Quebec), recent 2007 Canadian Junior National champion and GC threat, were leading. After the stage David remarked that the break was made up of many different teams and they were all working well together. “When I bridged across, the gap got pretty good quite quickly so I knew there was a chance,” said Davis.

This break set the tone for the rest of the race. It managed a 1:36 lead before GC contenders and team mates Taylor Phinney and Danny Summerhill, both with the US National team, began bringing it back. As the break entered the streets of Val d’Or and began the three-lap finishing circuit the gap had been reduced to 1:12. Devon Novakowski (Team Ontario) took the town line sprint earning $200 and making up for crashing in yesterday’s first stage. As the break completed the second lap, the peloton had brought the break to within 40 seconds.

David decided to go for the win as he attacked the break with one lap to go. “I probably still had a bit left if I was to get caught, but it was pretty much all or nothing move,” he recounted after the race. David was so intent on winning that he rolled across the line with his head down, pounding away on the pedals, completely unaware that he had won the race.

It wasn’t until the next hill that the commissaries flagged him down and informed that him that the race was over. Arnaud Papillon (Andre Cycle/IdCad) led the remnants of the break, six seconds back, narrowly edging Stephane Cossette (Equipe de Quebec) for third.

Cossette may have been missed the stage win, but because of his efforts on the day moved into first overall with a 17-seconds advantage over David who claimed second as a result of his win. GC leader Boivin finished with the pack in 18th and thus drops to 3rd overall with Phinney and Summerhill rounding out the top five.

Stage four gets underway early tomorrow morning with the infamous 14.5km Individual time trial, which begins 80 meters below ground in a mine and climbs at a gradient of 17% over 500 meters to reach the streets above. Later tomorrow evening racers will contest a 63km criterium in the neighboring community of Amos. It is expected that the GC will begin to sort itself out tomorrow with the opportunity for gains to be made in the test against the clock.
