April 26, 2008 (Brasstown Bald, Georgia) — The man that perhaps no one was paying attention to came out in force today and snatched the big victory at the 2008 Tour De Georgia. Kanstantin Siutsou (Blr) Team High Road won the savage battle up the climb up Brasstown Bald to not only take the stage, but also the overall leaders jersey. The 26-year old man who took 32nd place in last year’s Tour De France had his coming out party on one of the most notorious climbs in the U.S.

With the inclusion of this year’s team trial trial, many insiders knew that there was a fair likelihood that the deciding factor in this year’s Tour De Georgia would once again be the mammoth climb up Brasstown Bald. With all the favorites within seconds of Aussie Trent Lowe’s (Slipstream Chipotle Presented By H30) hold on the leader’s jersey it was clear that the heavy hitters would be watching each other closely before making anything that appeared to be a decisive move.

The move that did form occurred about an hour into the stage, and all the participants involved (Craig Lewis of Team High, Ivan Stevic of Toyota-United, Jason McCartney from the CSC squad, Astana’s Andrey Mizurov, Canada’s Svein Tuft from Symmetrics, Stephan Schreck of Gerolsteiner, and local favorite Neil Shirley of Jittery Joe’s) were not able to go the distance. But considering today’s parcours, that was an understandable outcome.

The 142.3km ride from Blairsville, Georgia to the mountain top finish at Brasstown Bald included the category one climb of Hogpen Gap, the category two climb up Unicoi Gap, and the HC monster that is Brasstown. If the distance on offer was mild by comparison to the previous day’s effort to Dahlonegha, the numbers tell a different story. Stage 6 would feature over 1,524m of elevation gain, and with the threat of rain lingering, the stage had all the earmarks of potentially being epic once again.

By the time the break reached the descent after Hogpen, only Shirley, Tuft, Mizurov, and McCartney remained, and the field had been broken up with six men chasing the leaders off the front. After the cresting the second climb of the day, the foursome were absorbed, but not before Shirley had a go at a serious flyer from about 12.8km/8 miles out from the finish. Then the counterattacks ensued. CSC’s Bradley McGee leapt off the field and wound up going up the road with longtime U.S. Postal domestique Chechu Rubiera. Then it was McGee’s teammate Bobby Julich’s turn to make an effort towards the front of the race.

But that and several other efforts were useless in the end. As expected Levi Leipheimer (USA) Astana and the man in yellow, Lowe, marked each other mercilessly as they reached the final and crucial moments out on the road. With the pair of contenders eyeing each other so closely, they perhaps didn’t take note that a High Road rider was making his case for the win right along with them. No, not “that” High Road rider, but the man from Belarus Kanstantin Siutsou. Between the three of them, the battle was nothing short of man-a-mano. Whatever offensive moves one man launched at the other, it was duly answered — that is until the last 300 meters or so, when Siutsou made his dominance clear. He crossed the mountain-top finish ahead of Lowe, with Leipheimer in third.

Controversy ensued however after the three men crossed the line, while there was some conjecture as to whether the time split between Lowe and the stage winner had cost the young Australian the overall. The mood on the summit quieted significantly as the officials tabulated the final results. In the end it was declared that Siutsou who started the day only six seconds in arrears had seized enough time to grab the overall leader’s jersey from Lowe’s back.

With tomorrow’s circuit race unlikely to effect the standings High Road, who took the win at this year’s Flèche Wallonne, will look to add another trophy to this year palmares.
