April 25, 2008 (Dahlonega, Georgia) — Bringing the nation “down under” some glory at this year’s Tour de Georgia was the six-foot rail from Australia, Bissell rider Richard England. England make a strong last second big for glory and came over the line first at the Stage 5 finish in Dahlonega, where gold was first pulled from the ground in the United States.

The longest day in the race at 214.7km/133.4 miles, it was perhaps the final opportunity for those teams without a realistic shot at the overall general classification to show their stuff on behalf of their egos and their sponsors. After yesterday’s team time trial, the three teams with a true stake in the final yellow jersey; Slipstream, Team High Road, and Astana would no doubt be content with simply controlling the action back in the peloton while some of those less invested teams had their day out front.

And as they have been doing all week, Symmetrics did not waste any time being aggressive and ensuring that they would be included in the break that would undoubtedly go away as soon as things got rolling from Suwannee, Georgia. This time it was 2007 Elite Road Canadian National Champion Cameron Evans getting in the move along with Valery Kobzarenko (Team Type 1), Tim Johnson (Health Net p/b Maxxis), and Edward King (Bissell). The quartet moved off of the front of a motivated peloton just an hour or so after the race began.

Behind them a certain amount of chaos and defeat was reigning over those following the four leaders. Several riders decided to abandon the race including Emile Abraham (Team Type 1), BMC’s Danilo Wyss and not one, but two Toyota-United riders: Ben Day and Henk Vogels. But the damage was not isolated to those on two wheels. A smash-up in the caravan saw the Health Net support vehicle take some significant damage after it ran into BMC car.

Because the race profile included some significant climbs the breakaway riders knew that on offer today was the King Mountains jersey that had been frozen on the back of Health Net’s Frank Pipp for some time now. Bissell’s Ted King found himself in possession of that prize just as the riders completed the 160km mark. With two climbs left on the day’s parcours, Evans decided that he would take some KOM points on his own behalf.

Despite the cooperation within the group of four, the gap began to shrink slowly as they approached the day’s final climb just outside of the finishing city of Dahlonegha. Despite a small threat of rain hovering, the peloton finally swooped down on the leaders just before the final climb of the day. Johnson made a final desperate move, but couldn’t hold off the tremendous horsepower behind him.

Out of the storm emerged a select group of extremely motivated riders including one England from the Bissell squad. Heading up the small final kicker of a hill, he gave it all he had to take the last few hundred meters and give his team their first victory at this year’s Tour De Georgia. Not too far behind him was Symmetrics’ Andrew Pinfold in fourth, showing once again that he’s still looking to bring Canada some glory before the Tour concludes.

As for the general classification, once again it looks like tomorrow’s monolithic 1,458m climb up to the top of Brasstown Bald will be the decisive day at the Tour De Georgia.
