Tour de Georgia – Stage 3 Report, Full Results, Photos – Henderson Wins and Leads

April 23, 2008 (Gainesville, Georgia) – Gregory Henderson (NZl) Team High Road followed up his team mate Kim Kirchen’s win today at Fleche Wallone taking Stage 3, from Washington to Gainesville, 174.1km/108.2miles, in a sprint finish over another team mate André Greipel (Ger) in second, and Tyler Farrar (USA) Slipstream Chipotle p/b H30 in third.

Kiwi sprinter Gregory Henderson (Nzl) Team High Road bettered his second place of Stage 2 of the 2008 Tour De Georgia, by being the first rider to crest the final hill awt today’s finishing circuits in Gainesville, GA. Henderson won the Stage 3 sprint ahead of teammate Andre Greipal and Slipstream-Chipotle’s Tyler Farrar.

Riders left the picturesque town of Washington, Georgia at 11am local time, heading out over rolling terrain en route to the finish in Gainesville. A flurry of attacks from a variety of squads who may not feature in the race for the overall general classification animated the early part of the day’s effort. Unfortunately part of the early action included a crash in the field that resulted in Slipstream-Chipotle rider Timothy Duggan being carted off to a hospital. Eventually Frank Pipp (USA) Health Net p/b Maxxis (wearing the King of the Mountains jersey, Trek-Marco Polo rider Rhys Pollock, Scott Zwizanski (USA) Bissell Pro Cycling, and Team Type 1’s Moises Aldape Chavez made the escape that stuck. The quartet built up an advantage of over four minutes as the day wore on.

The gap began to narrow quickly during the last 32km/20 miles out on the road, and the fatigue began to show on the faces of the breakaway riders. Pipp and Pollock soldiered on by themselves in a last ditch effort for survival, but as expected, they were caught with just under 12km/8 miles remaining setting up conditions for the day’s predicted sprint finish.

Symmetrics rider Andrew Pinfold, who was yesterday’s highest place Canadian on stage 2, was still confident in his form and looking to be set up once again for today’s stage. Yesterday Pinfold took 5th place into Augusta behind the other super fast men in the peloton, and was able to avoid a last minute crash that ruined the day for some who were jockeying for a fast wheel.

“That all happened behind me, so luckily I didn’t see any of it. I had to burn a bit of energy to go from 20th place to where I needed to be. But my legs were pretty burnt at that point. If I hadn’t used so much of my sprint in the last 700 to 500 meters to go, then I might have come around somebody. But as it stood it was good.”

Today, however, was not Pinfold’s day. When the riders entered the first of two finishing circuits Rory Sutherland (Aus) Health Net p/b Maxxis made a bold move off the front field that included a serious effort up and around the hills of Candler Street Park. That move won Sutherland the Most Aggressive Rider of the day. But Sutherland could not stay away, and when the field came together for the final sprint, it was High Road riders Henderson and Greipal that had the most muscle in the pack.

Henderson won the stage ahead of his teammate and as a bonus clinched the leader’s jersey. And if that wasn’t enough, he also donned the Points leader jersey as well. Pipp maintains the King of the Mountains prize as there were no KOM points today and Farrar’s third spot on today’s podium was good enough to place him in the Best Young Rider’s jersey.
