April 22, 2008 (Augusta, Georgia) – It was a latin double victory in today’s 188km stage at the Tour De Georgia. Former teammates J.J. Haedo (CSC) and Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) were the big winners at Stage 2 from Statesboro to the river city of Augusta. Haedo claimed the stage victory while his Cuban colleague was able to hold on to the leader’s jersey for yet another day.
The Stage 2 start was blessed with tons of southern sunshine as the peloton left Statesboro, Georgia. With Toyota-United’s Ivan Dominguez wearing the leader’s jersey, his team mate former Canadian road race champion Dominique Rollin said before the race that the team was very satisfied with their win. Rollin worked in defense of that lead all day despite the warmer weather.
“At the moment Ivan is going well, so we’ll just keep working for him. I’m feeling OK, just too much sunshine for me!”
Equally optimistic before the race was Symmetrics rider Svein Tuft, who thought teammate Christian Meier did a superb job for the team yesterday.
“I thought it was a good little start for us. The first stage is always kinda stressful and everyone’s getting the jitters out. You never know what’s going to happen. The course is pretty flat, and it was a fast day. Christian jumping in the move was great for us. Any second a guy can grab in this race is good.”
The stage however turned into a three-man horse race for the majority of the day, with Toyota-United’s Justin England getting away from the peloton just before the feed zone. He was joined soon after by Jelly Belly’s Bryce Mead and Trek-Marco Polo’s Rhys Pollack after they bridged up to the rider from North Carolina. The threesome stayed away from the majority of the day, scooping up sprint points.
In the end High Road turned on the gas along with the Gerolsteiner squad to bring back the trio. After the catch was made, Team Slipstream-Chipotle lead the field into the first of the finishing circuits hunting for the King of the Mountains jersey, which would be awarded actually within the city limits of Augusta. That prize eventually went to Frank Pipp (USA) Health Net p/b Maxxis in the end, before Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) and Ted King (Bissell) leapt off the front of the field. The pair kept a 10-second gap ahead of the rest of the riders with one lap remaining but were brought back shortly after they passed through the start finish.
With the speeds picking up as the race drew closer and closer to the finale, it was a showdown of the fast men with all the sprinters hunting the right wheel to follow. With Dominguez well-placed to retain his leaders jersey, he and Rollin closed in on the last kilometers of the day. But behind him, quietly calculating his last second attack, was J.J. Haedo. Haedo watched Dominguez take off with 200 meters to go and new that the moment to strike had arrived. Despite nursing a broken hand, Haedo’s pain was manageable enough to snatch victory.
“I was a little more confident today about my hand, so I took a chance. I got a good position. I found a good train, and I used it to my advantage.”
Team High Road’s Greg Henderson took second place, while Dominguez took third. The “Cuban Missile” also retained the overall leaders jersey going into stage three, as well as the points jersey.
