July 7, 2002 (Luxembourg) – The heretofore little known Rubens Bertogliati
(Lampre Daikin) certainly made a name for himself today. Not only did he
take Stage 1 and the Yellow Jersey, but he managed to outwit and outgun
Erik Zabel (Telekom) and his Telekom team to the line. Bertogliati
made a gutsy move in a typical Tour de France suicide move in the last
kilometers. This time, as it rarely does — the move worked and Bertogliati
held on to the line. Zabel didn’t win, but could content himself with the
Green Jersey, which is his primary goal for the Tour.
