Tour de France Stage 8

July 13, 2003 – Revelation, Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi), has taken an amazing win victory today on the famous Alpe d'Huez climb. The stage ran 219k and definitely has been a significant day in shaping this year's Tour. After a gradual whittling away of the field, led by a powerful USPS pace-setting, the Basque rider launched out of a small select group with 10 kms to go on the final climb, finishing 1:45 in front of Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom) and 2:12 in front of Lance Armstrong (USPS.) The other revelation today was that of the “other American” Tyler Hamilton (CSC) who, despite nursing a broken collarbone, not only finished in the Armstrong group, but attacked several times, ultimately finishing 7th.
