July 7, 2003 – A few surprises in today's race. First was the appearance of Tyler Hamilton (CSC) on the  startline. Hamilton broke his clavicle in yesterday's massive pile-up in the final kilometer, and like Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank) was not expected to start today. However, Hamilton, full of painkillers and special handlebar tape to pad his injured right side, did start, and finish. How long will the American be able to ride with a broken clavicle is what many are asking? The stage itself included a long breakaway that was caught in the final kilometers by the sprinter's teams. Fassa Bortolo and FDJ.com led to the  finish, where FDJ.com rider Baden Cooke took the stage. This puts Cooke in third overall behind his teammate and countryman Brad McGee.
