June 19, 2010 (Quebec City, QC) – Following the fifth stage on the streets of Old Quebec City, Ben Day (Fly V Australia) remained in yellow as the overall leader of the 25th Tour de Beauce.

But it was Marc De Maar (Unitedhealthcare) who won the 135-kilometre race in 3:19:21sec, his second stage victory at the Tour, as he also won at Mont Megantic on Thursday.

He was followed by Javier Megias Leal (Esp) Team Type in second, Morgan Schmitt (USA) Unitedhealthcare p/b Maxxis in third, Francisco Mancebo Perez (Esp) Heraklio-Murcia in fourth, with Day in fifth, all a four seconds behind the winner.

The Quebec City stage is a prelude to the upcoming Pro Tour race that will be held on September 10 in Quebec City. The Tour de Beauce management and the jury of commissaires decided that the first of the 11 laps would be a neutralised lap, so that the riders and the caravan would have the chance to familiarize themselves with the course.

“A perfect course for spectators and photos,” remarked race leader Day. “There are a couple of spots where you have to watch the course more carefully. But it’s really fun to ride in beautiful Quebec City.”

The Fly V Australia team did the work that was needed to protect Day’s yellow jersey. “The team controlled the race very well,” he explained. “It was exactly what we had to do. There’s one more stage left in Saint Georges, and it is difficult. Of course we are going to try to keep the jersey but we don’t take it for granted. “

Day’s teammate Charles Dionne (Can) was hoping a victory in Quebec City. “The team wanted to do it but I didn’t have the legs at the end. We were at the front throughout the race. The team rode well but we spent a lot of energy at the start and at the end I was really suffering. The important thing is that the team is still holding the yellow jersey. It’s a very good course however there are some adjustments to make.”

In a way De Maar took revenge over a decision by the commissaires forcing him to adjust his bicycle seat at the time trial on Friday. “I won two stages, the two most difficult of the Tour, and I believe that it will difficult to dislodge Ben Day in the overall standings. I took off with two kilometres left. This was like a reflex for me and I succeeded to get away and found myself alone in the lead,” said De Maar.

Canadian David Boily (SpiderTech p/b Planet Energy) placed seventh on the stage and still holds the Red jersey for the best young rider (U23). “I would have really liked to have a victory here. The race was very interesting and it was fun to ride in front of all the people. The course is fun, very technical and it allows the spectators to get a good view. It’s a great opportunity to perform in front of friends and family. That doesn’t happen very often.”

Mountain bike pro rider, Raphaël Gagné, on the Quebec team, is comfortable riding road bikes as well. “I have been having a very good Tour up to now. For me, the Tour de Beauce is a good way to prepare because I have a lot of mountain bike races coming up.”

Day has kept the white jersey as points leader while Danny Summerhill (USA) Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin U23 is now wearing the polka-dot jersey for the best climber (KOM).

The 25th Tour de Beauce will finish on Sunday with the downtown Saint Georges circuit, a 130-kilometre stage which is never easy. Once again the riders of the Fly V Australia team will have to work hard to allow Day to keep his yellow jersey.
