June 17, 2010 (Mont Mégantic, QC) – The third stage of the 25th Tour de Beauce, the Mont Megantic stage, crowned a new leader in the overall standings. By winning the 153-kilometre race, Marc de Maar (Ned) Unitedhealthcare took over the yellow jersey. He was followed at 8s by Canada’s Derrick St. John (Garneau Club Chaussures) in second and Valeriy Kobzarenko (Ukr) Team Type I at 16 seconds behind in third.
It was quite a while before a real breakaway formed but during this wait there was a lot of action in the pack with several small attacks creating a fast pace.
Finally, at 58km into the stage, six riders got away and managed to hold on until reaching Mont Megantic, with a gap of more than three minutes at some points.
Riders benefited from an unexpected rest when the race was held up due to extensive road work on the main street in Piopolis as it would have been very dangerous to let proceed at full speed. The six leaders were stopped first and then it was the peloton’s turn. The result was a seven-minute rest for everyone.
The short rest was good for David Boily (Can) SpiderTech p/b Planet Energy who finished tenth on this stage. “The rest gave me back my legs,” explained the Quebec rider. “At the beginning of the mountain, my team was well-placed in the pack and I was able to get a small lead. Five kilometres from the finish, the team did an exceptional job. This is my first Tour de Beauce and I am happy with what I have done up to now. I had heard about the mountain and was told it was difficult. It’s true, but I was able to manage my race well. It’s really fun to race in this part of the country.”
St. John, who had managed to slip away from the other riders in the breakaway group, seemed to be heading to the finish line for a victory, but this did not take into account Marc de Maar. “At 150 metres from the line, he passed me quite fast. It was impossible for me to follow. All the training that I did this year was in preparation for today’s stage. I’ve been confident in my abilities since the Tour began. I did my part in the break and waited for the right moment to launch my attack on the mountain. This is, without doubt, my best performance and I’m sure that the big boss (Louis Garneau) will be very happy,” commented St. John.
De Maar mentioned that he had not been feeling very good at the start. “I felt bad for a good portion of the day but everything straightened out when we got to the foot of the mountain. Our team really worked well, and when I saw that Ben Day didn’t seem very comfortable, I told myself that it was the time to take off. However, I wasn’t sure if I was the winner because I didn’t know how many riders there were in front. It was only a few metres from the finish that I could see I was the winner. The Mont Megantic hill is imposing but it isn’t a problem for me. I race a lot in Europe and I’ve seen a lot of hills of this type. I knew that there was a risk that the overall standings would be upset after today’s stage. Friday are the time trials and there are several riders to watch, like Day.”
Rafael Serrano Fernandez (Esp) Heraklio-Murcia, who wore the yellow jersey, finished in the middle of the pack and held on to one polka-dot jersey as the best climber. The red jersey for best young rider (U23) went to Boily, and the white points leader jersey remained with Canada’s Andrew Pinfold (Unitedhealthcare).
Overall, de Maar in yellow holds a lead of seven seconds over St. John, 14 seconds on Kobzarenko, 19 seconds over Björn Papstein (SC Wlendenbruck 2000) and 24 seconds over Darren Rolfe (V Australia). Boily is in ninth at 41 seconds and François Parisien (SpiderTech p/b Planet Energy) is in 13th at 59 seconds.
