Tour de Beauce Stage 2 Lac Mégantic Report, FULL Results, Photos – UPDATED

report by the Tour de Beauce

June 12, 2014 (Lac Mégantic, QC) – Latvia’s Tom Skujins (Hincapie Sportswear Development Cycling Team) donned the Tour de Beauce leader’s yellow jersey with great pride following a gruelling rain-filled day with a stunning victory on Stage 2, at the top of Mount St. Joseph. Canada’s Mike Woods (Amore Vita) took second followed by Carter Jones (Optum P / B Kelly) in third.

A cold and rainy day, with the mercury close to 5 degrees Celsius, greeted riders for their departure signaled by Colette Roy-Laroche, the Mayor of Lac-Megantic. While the rain eased off occasionally during the 167-km route it returned for the final four-kilometre climb that featured average grades of 11.6% topping out at 17%.

“We escaped with eight riders after thirty kilometers,” explained Skujins. “In our break the cohesion was good but because of the temperature and conditions we did not take more risks than needed.”

The break consisted of Bruno Langlois (Can) and James Stemper (USA) of 5Hr Energy, Adam Farabaugh (USA) Garneau-Quebecor, Jure Kocjan (Slo) and Joshua Berry (USA) of SmartStop, Jacob Rathe (USA) Jelly Belly, Aurélien Passeron (Fra) Silber Pro Cycling Team and Skujins.

Their lead stretch out to over 5 minutes but started to drop and was down to 2:55 with 50km to go. Kocjan and Berry decided to attack with about 25km to go and only Skujins could respond. “It was not really the right thing to do,” continued Skujins, “Not at this point in the race. I managed to join them and we worked together. At the foot of Mount Mégantic, I was not sure what to think because both riders seemed tired, but it could be a bluff. And the field was less than two minutes behind.”

As the others in the initial break were swallowed up by the advancing pack the Latvian rider had the legs and dropped his breakaway companions to cross the finish line first and take over the race lead.

“I am very happy with this win, because this is my first year with the team and I’m glad to be able to offer them this victory. It’s very good for me too. I was thinking more of a win on Sunday to celebrate my 23rd birthday, but I’ll take this gift today.”

During the podium ceremony the new yellow jersey holder drew more admiration with another classy move as he offered a bouquet of flowers to the Mayor of Lac-Mégantic .

Canada’s Woods was more than pleased to land on the podium in second. “For me it’s like a victory. I really have not been lucky this season. In March I was the victim of a fall and suffered a concussion… and then I got sick.

“So I am very satisfied with my performance today. Especially since I had to change bikes early in the race because mine broke. The service SRAM provided was great and it took me about twenty kilometres before I got used to it. The last two km were really difficult, but as I spent four months in Italy I had the opportunity to climb some of the more difficult hills. ”

For the Canadian rider, the city of Mégantic is something special. “This is my third participation at this stage of Mont Mégantic, and as a Canadian, the tragedy that struck this town really touched me. That’s why I dedicate this race and my second place to all the people of this region.”

On Friday the Tour de Beauce caravan heads to Saint-Jean-de-la-Lande for the individual time trial – a race against the clock.
