Tirreno-Adriatico Stage 5 Report, Full Results – Rodriguez Scores First 2013 WorldTour Win for Katusha

report by Katusha

March 10, 2013 (Chieti, Italy) –  Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Esp) Katusha delivered the first WorldTour win for Katusha in 2013 taking the fifth stage of “Tirreno-Adriaco”, from Ortona to Chieti – a very long and demanding stage, 229-km long with a summit finish at 20% highest pendence.

Katusha Team’s Spanish rider attacked in the hardest point of the last uphill with one of his usual, overwhelming rushes: nobody could resist, and ‘Purito’ took a solo victory. The first rivals reached the finishing line 8″ behind, with Bauke Mollema (Blanco) in second position and Alberto Contador (SaxoBank-Tinkoff) to complete the final podium.

Thanks to this performance, Rodriguez moved to 7th position in general classification, 55″ behind the new leader Chris Froome (Sky).

“I’m very happy for this performance,” said Purito. “It was very important both for me and for the team, since it’s the first in a World Tour race. I remember very well the final part of this stage and its incredibly tough stretch. We were very careful from the beginning to the end, because we knew it was very difficult to win here in Chieti: everybody was expecting something from me, they know these finals are my speciality.

“Tomorrow there will be another long, demanding stage: we’re not fighting anymore to win the final classification, but we will try to take a good result anyways, also because my teammates are in a great shape. We should put one of us in the breakaway, then we will attempt something, we have nothing to lose.”

The stage was characterized by an early breakaway made by 8 riders: Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Merida), Valerio Agnoli (Astana), Oscar Gatto (Fantini Selle Italia), Michal Schar (BMC), Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil), Stijn Devolder (RadioShack-Leopard), Sebastian Langeveld (Orica-GreenEdge) and Maxim Belkov, the Russian rider of Katusha Team protagonist of a great performance in “Strade Bianche”.

The eight men managed to reached a highest gap of 8? at the first King of Mountain point, in Forchetta di Palena: but in the second categorized uphill, Passo Lanciano, with the chasing group 2’30″ far, Cunego decided to try his luck and go by himself. The Italian rider kept the head of the race solo until the last climbing, 6,5 kilometers far fromChieti’s finishing line.

With the group in lock step, Sky imposed a very hard pace, that made a huge selection. With 1,3 kilometers to go, ‘Purito’ Rodriguez made the crucial attack: in a while, the Spanish rider managed to gain 10″ over the first riders. The chase gave up to that incredible rush and Katusha Team’s leader could rise his arms for his second victory of this season, afterGreenMountaininOman.
