August 14, 2003 (Bromont, Quebec) – This morning under blue skies, the 2003 Track Nationals got underway with the Sprint and the Pursuit qualifying events. The first to take to the track were the Senior Men as Travis Smith of Alberta put in the fastest time of 11.431seconds with Lars Madsen of Alberta close on his heels with a time of 11.491 seconds. Lori-Anne Muenzer of Alberta took the Senior Women's event by over a second with a time of 11.879 seconds while Cynthia Beaulieu of Quebec qualified fastest in the Junior Women's event with a time of 13.55seconds – which would have placed her fourth in the Senior Women. However, the most inspiring sprinting was executed by young Scott Crump of British Columbia who is only 16 years of age. He qualified with the fastest time of 11.850 seconds which was also the eighth fastest time in the Senior Men's event.

The Pursuit qualifiers were next, and it was Erin Carter of Manitoba who put in the fastest time of 3:52 minutes. She will face Mandy Poitras of British Columbia in the final tomorrow. Kevin Lacombe qualified first in the junior men and Bob Veroba of Alberta first in the Senior Men.

Last up were all final events, the Scratch races and the Kilo events. The junior women's Scratch Race, an unofficial national race due to lack of participants, was taken by Naomi Cooper of British Columbia in the sprint. In the senior women's Scratch Race it was Poitras who was victorious with her surge of speed in the final lap.

With even more speed Smith, who had qualified first in the sprints, took gold in the Senior Men's Kilo Time Trial in a time of 1.06 minutes. Crump also blasting across the finish line, continued his inspiring performances, by taking gold in the junior men's Kilo Time Trial in a time of 1.10 minutes.
