Tim Hortons Track Nationals – Day 3

August 16th, 2003 (Bromont, Quebec) – It was another day of scary incidents at the Tim Hortons Canadian National Track Championships!

The day started off with more time trial events. In the Olympic Sprint Qualifying event, the Track Team, otherwise known as the Guru team, qualified fastest in the Senior Men's event with a time of 48.874 seconds. They later went on to win the finals against the Schwalbe sprint team, despite a heart-stopping incident. Lars Madsen of Alberta, a member of the Track Team, was still doing up the straps of his shoes when the officials started the countdown. The buzzer sounded and the Schwalbe Sprint team blasted out of the gates. Everyone was screaming for them to stop because the Track Team had not started and were still on the start line – spread out across the track. Joel Regimbald of Alberta had his head down and was powering out of the corner and only saw the wall of three riders with 10 meters to go. He swerved up track but the two riders behind him had no choice but to close their eyes and rush through the small gaps between riders. Besides a few gasps and elevated heart-rates the riders were left unscathed by the incident!

In the 500 meter Senior Women's time trials, gusty winds even had experienced rider Lori-Ann Muenzer of Alberta thinking that doing a time under 36 seconds was going to be tough. However, despite the conditions Muenzer rose to the challenge and put in a spectacular performance with a time of 35.027 seconds. Mandy Poitras of British Columbia, known more for the endurance events, showed her sprinting capabilities coming second in a time of 37.900 seconds.

During the lunchtime break, many doubted that the afternoon track schedule would proceed because of the daunting looking skies. However, the rain held off and the racing continued for the second session. The first mass start event was the Senior Women's Points Race. Erin Carter of Manitoba rode an aggressive race but in the end it was Mandy Poitras of British Columbia who sprinted her way to gold.

Next was the Junior Men's Scratch Race, attacking with almost two laps to go Zach Grant of Alberta held on by only a few millimeters to take gold. It was a gutsy move but one that paid off in the end. In the Senior Men's Scratch Race it was the opposite – it came down to a five man sprint that required a photo-finish examination. Ryan McKenzie of Alberta won the sprint but was immediately relegated to 5th place by the officials for his dangerous riding maneuvers. As he crossed the finish line he lifted both hands off the handlebars to salute his victory – at 60-65km/hr this maneuver is less then safe! He appealed the decision and won, reclaiming his victory, but was given a severe warning!
