August 15th, 2003 (Bromont, Quebec) – The second day of competition at the 2003 Track National Championships was again a success – NO RAIN!!! However, despite the lack of precipitation there were young athletes hitting the track floor. During the Junior Men's Points Race, a disastrous crash caused many athletes to go somersaulting into the infield. One of the crash victims was Marsh Cooper of British Columbia who had already lapped the field twice and was leading the race. Unfortunately he was unable to continue, along with a few others, but officials decided not to penalize the riders caught up in the accident since there were only six laps left in the race.

Earlier in the day, Cooper competed in the Junior Men's Team Pursuit with Team Alberta finishing third behind the Quebec powerhouse Pursuit Team who finished with a time of 4:47 minutes! In the Senior Men's Team Pursuit it was the Schwalbe Team who took home gold with a time of 4:42 minutes. Great times for both events!!

In the time-trial events, it was Erin Carter's red shiny Giro aero-helmet putting in some gold medal performances again. Yesterday that helmet was seen time and time again by different people, from different provinces during different events! Today, not only did the helmet win the Senior Women's Pursuit event when Carter took gold but it also won in the Junior Men's Pursuit and Junior Women's Pursuit. Both Kevin Lacombe and Audrey Lemieux of Quebec wore Carter's helmet and both won gold!

After the Pursuit events, the sprinters took to the track.  Close matches and photo-finish sprints had the crowd on their feet time and time again. Lars Madsen of Alberta and Lori-Ann Muenzer of Alberta both took gold in the Senior Sprint events. Cynthia Beaulieu of Quebec showed that she is Canada's top young sprinter by taking gold and deserves her spot on the Junior World Track team heading to Moscow, Russia next week.

The final races of the evening were the Senior Men and Junior Men's Points Races. Glen Rendall of Ontario dominated most of the sprints in the Senior Men's Race and Marsh Cooper dominated by distance in the Junior Men's race. Both were impressive demonstrations of endurance and strength.
