July 12, 2008 (Mont Ste Anne, Quebec) – It’s pouring rain on Sunday morning at Mont Ste Anne and DH course is completely soaked and the forecast is calling for more rain as conditions get worse. The amateurs will be going off in about 1 hour and the Junior and Elite competitions begin at 2 pm. More updates as they become available.
The 2008 Tim Hortons Canadian National Downhill Championship finals take place on Sunday, July 13 on the storied Mont Ste Anne, Quebec downhill track. One of the longest and most brutal tracks on the world cup circuit, Canada’s best riders will take to a slightly shorter version to crown the country’s 2008 champions late tomorrow afternoon.
The track has seen little maintenance due to copious amounts of rain in the last month, and has been hammered by runoff, recreational riders, and now a few hundred DH racers over the past few days. Huge rocks have been dislodged in the process and every run is an adventure for riders who have to dodge obstacles that may not have there the run previously.
And the weather is about to take a turn for the worse, so any course obstacles may be the least of riders concerns as storms are supposed to roll in early tomorrow morning. Look for favorite Micayla Gatto (BC) Commencal and newcomer Danice Yusegi (BC) pinkbike.com to take podium spots for the women and Andrew MItchell (BC) Cove Bikes, Steve Chan (BC) Giant Bikes and defending champ Luke Kitzanuk (QC) Giant Bikes battle it out for the men’s title.
