April 24, 2004 – A former well-known Toronto sports entrepreneur was recently married in Cuba. Thom Hughes married Cuban model Mariam Jimenez in Havana on January 17. Fifty guests from both Canada and Cuba attended the reception.

Hughes has spent a great deal of the past 10 years living in Cuba. During the 1980s, however, he was a popular local figure heavily involved in the cycling scene. He was the race organizer and director of numerous events, including the Carlsberg Light Grand Prix, the Sportsweek Grand Prix, and the Bloor Cycle Road Race.

Hughes also served as the team director for one of the top racing clubs in Canada from 1980-87. The squad was called the Catena Cycle Racing Team in 1980, the Bloor Cycle Racing Team from '81-'85, and the Ford/Bloor Cycle Racing Team in '86 and '87.
