December 18, 2006 (Alkmaar Holland) – This past weekend on Saturday, December 16, at the Moscow Track World Cup #2 in an out of competition attempt, Holland’s Theo Bos set the new world record at 9.772 for the men’s 200m flying start, recording the fastest time at sea level.

The 23-year-old world champion Bos broke Canadian Curt Harnett’s world record of 9.865 set in 1995 at the World Championships in Bogota, Colombia.

For those of you unfamiliar with Theo Bos here’s a backgrounder on the new 200m world record holder.

Bos, born on August 22, 1983 in Hierden, Holland, currently lives in Alkmaar Holland, 50 km north of Amsterdam. The son of Teuny and Willem Bos he is the youngest of four brothers, Willem, Jan and Anton. His brother Jan is a prolific speedskater, World Champion and member of the Olympic team from 1998-2002.

Theo trains on a new track that was built in Alkmaar in 2004. It is a 250m track with wood from the jungles of Siberia. He trains four days a week with the Dutch National team in Alkmaar.

Bos has been professional since 2004 when his sponsor was Plusine.com. In 2006 the Dutch bicycle manufacturer KOGA, sponsored him. His new sponsor for 2007 is DSB, a finance company that also sponsors a football team in Alkmaar and Marianne Vos, the 2006 Road Worlds women’s champion. Peter Pieters is Bos’ Dutch coach.
