The Power of Armstrong, Twitter and the Scots

August 19, 2009 (Glasgow, Scotland) – Some 200 cyclists turned out in the rain yesterday to join Lance Armstrong (Astana) on a ride in nearby Paisley, Renfrewshire according to the Scotland Herald. It started with a Twitter message that Armstrong sent out saying: “Hey Glasgow, Scotland!! I’m coming your way tomorrow. Who wants to go for a bike ride??” and “Hey Glasgow – ride’s at 12 noon. Location tbd. Stay tuned! Still dialing it in. And yes, I have my rain coat!”

Armstrong, 37, is a seven-time TdF champion and third place finisher in the 2009 Tour. He may well also be the world’s most famous athlete attracting plenty of media attention. And he may have had a particular draw in Scotland because Armstrong is a Scottish name. Former world champion in individual pursuit, Graeme Obree, was among those joining Armstrong for the ride.
