July 13, 2004 – The Confederation Trail Open, scheduled for September 24-26, 2004, is the ultimate three-day stage race for both elite and recreational cyclists. Participants pedal tip-to-tip on the Island ‘s Confederation Trail, while single track branch routes through hills and forests test participants’ skill and endurance.
The Confederation Trail Open sees participants register in one of two classes: ‘elite’ or ‘recreational.’ It is wise to remember both will challenge your stamina!
The recreational course runs tip-to-tip along the entire 300km length of the Confederation Trail over three stages, with the start and finish occurring at the Island ‘s tips. Participants can enter as solo or as a three-person team and have the opportunity to win prizes.
The Canadian Cycling Association sanctioned elite course follows the Trail but includes single track off-Trail loops, with areas such as Brookvale Provincial Park providing major challenges. These loops serve to make the elite course more challenging by adding distance and natural hazards to the already difficult Trail. Elite participants register only as solo participants, with cash prizes for each division.
As the event’s race component occurs over three days, festivities at the two ‘overnights’ will entertain participants and spectators alike. Night one sees festivities in the Summerside area; Night two in Charlottetown. Music, culture, food, refreshments, and camaraderie will warm the spirit, cool sore behinds, and lend encouragement for the next day’s approximately 100km leg.
Each participant will receive snacks and water during the event, and each evening a meal will be provided. The evening’s entertainment will be included in the registration fee for the participants. We will be providing areas for participants to set up tents and camp but accommodations are up to the individual.
