February 25, 2007 (Vancouver, BC) – With the first races of spring starting in less than two weeks, the riders of Team Trek Red Truck Racing have been through a full off-season of preparation for the upcoming year of racing. Having attended two training camps and been offered ongoing coaching and mentorship, the young riders who make up the majority of the Trek Red Truck roster will be ready for a full and successful 2007 season.
The highlight of the pre-season was the training camp held in Delta, British Columbia on a classic, foggy late January Pacific Coast weekend. With an almost full attendance from the 21 team riders, the camp offered a chance to put in some quality miles and prepare for the upcoming season. “We have an energetic group of new faces this year,” said Team Manager Steve Engh. “The training camp was a chance for the new recruits to mesh and get to know each other.”
The riders and staff arrived from various parts of BC– Nelson, Comox, Vancouver — to train with some of the top coaching talent in BC. Some of the riders were more pleased than others to get to Vancouver to get on their bikes after this snowy winter. Last year’s breakout espoir talent Jackson Buehler explained: “This has been a crazy winter””Nelson, where I live, has been socked in with snow for three months. I’ve spent most of the winter on skis, so it’s nice to get back on two wheels.”
Along with extensive time on the bike, the weekend included dry land training, time with sponsors, and classroom sessions covering topics from race preparation and tactics to season planning and media relations. Some of the notable faces that took part in instructing the crew were ex-Canadian National Champion and Sports Hall of Famer Sara Neil, who brings wealth of knowledge when it comes to the sport of bicycle racing. New Trek Red Truck riders including the 2005 U23 Canadian National silver medalist Ryan Anderson and 2005/ 2006 BC Junior Time Trial Champion Jeff Castenmiller were eager to soak up the wisdom from Neil and other team leaders like former National Champion and Worlds’ medallist Brian Green and multi-time National Team Member James Neil.
The development of young riders has always been the top priority of the team, says Steve Engh, team director. “We’ve spent nearly a decade with a strong focus on giving young riders the support they need to develop. Our great group of sponsors has really stepped up this year and allowed us to expand our espoir program and add a new women’s team so that we can make even greater efforts to grow the sport in British Columbia.”
With the Spring Racing Series approaching, the team is raring to begin its season and put all the physical, psychological and tactical preparation to the test in a British Columbia road racing cycling scene which only gets tougher and more competitive every year.
