Carter is a former pro who raced with SpiderTech-C10 co-founder Steve Bauer on the Motorola team in 1991. He competed in cycling’s greatest events in the 1980s and ’90s, including the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana, Tour of Switzerland and the professional world championships.
“I love a challenge, and I couldn’t turn down Steve’s offer to help SpiderTech-C10 reach its ambitious goal of racing at the Tour de France,” Carter said.
Carter joins the team as one of the two principal on-road directors, alongside Kevin Field. Bauer continues to guide the team’s sporting activities and strategic direction, and will direct the riders at major events, but his focus is increasingly on laying the groundwork for the team to step up to the World Tour level.
Carter’s background makes him an ideal addition to the team. Since his professional career, he has been working as sport director for Team Type 1 in the U.S. at the same time as coaching athletes through his business, Echelon Sports, based near Denver, Colorado. He has also continued to race himself, winning several masters world titles.
“We’ve been considering the need for an additional sport director for some time,” said Bauer. “When I found out Mike was no longer with Team Type 1 I was surprised, but jumped at the chance to engage him. I’ve been impressed with his work and Mike brings a calm demeanor and methodical approach that will fit well within our management team. I’ve known Mike more than 20 years; it was an easy choice for me and I’m really happy to welcome Mike to the team.”
Carter will join the team in Europe in mid-February to work alongside Field at the Ruta del Sol in the south of Spain. He will then join Bauer for the Belgian semi-classics.
“I’m really looking forward to working alongside Steve again,” Carter said. “I have a lot of great memories from our time together at Motorola and it’s going to be exciting taking the team program to the next level.”
