Team Rona Take Four Top spots at Green Mountain’s Prologue

August 31, 2002 (Warren, Vermont) – The four RONA riders entered in the
Green Mountain Stage Race took the four top spots in the prologue of the
race held yesterday evening. Geneviève Jeanson (CAN), Manon Jutras (CAN),
Melissa Holt (NZL) and Amy Jarvis (CAN) crossed the finish line in that order
after 13 km of racing. Canadian road champion Katy Saint-Laurent, of Team
Québec, finished 5th.

General Classification of the Green Mountain Stage Race follows a point
system rather than the compilation of cumulative times. After the prologue,
Jeanson has a four-point lead over her teammate Jutras. Last year RONA’s
Meshy Holt had won the Green Mountain race, ahead of her teammate Manon
Jutras and Karen Bockel (then with Gatorade, now with RONA).

Contrary to most prologues, which are generally time trials, this one was a
mass start. The peloton stayed together for the first 8k of the race, as the
course was mostly flat. But as soon as the race got to the climb toward the
Sugarbush ski resort, the pack exploded. The four RONA riders attacked and
it wasn’t long before Jeanson was out of sight. After a 300 meter vertical
climb over 5 kilometers, nobody had any doubts about Jeanson’s shape.

Today and tomorrow, the riders will compete in two 85k and 105k road races
which will certainly favour the climbers. Monday, September 2, will be a
criterium on the streets of Burlington. The race official web site is at
www.gmsr.info.
