May 7, 2003 – Team Kappa's diverse and talented female cyclists are revved
up for the 2003 season! They're already off to a flying start with a good
collection of podium finishes.
Lisa Sweeney, 22, two-time medallist at the 2001 Canada Summer Games,
grabbed second place in the first BC Cup road race in Pitt Meadows on April
15th. Sweeney also earned a berth on the BC Team for the grueling Columbia
Plateau stage race May second to fourth.
Sandra Walter, 23, took home a silver medal in the Race the Ridge mountain
bike race on April 19. The following morning she placed 5th in a
30-kilometre road time trial and then 3rd in a road criterium that
afternoon. She placed 2nd in the 2002 Canada Cup series and was named to
the National Team last year, proudly representing Team Canada at the 2002
World Mountain Bike Championships.
Kappa also welcomes new riders to the team. Claire Townsend is focusing on
mountain biking and adventure racing this season. In 2001 she was seen on
numerous Canada Cup podiums, she finished top ten at the Nationals and
placed 33rd at the World Championships in Vail, Colorado. So far this year
she has already nabbed a second place finish at the first race in the Gutbuster
Trail Running series on Duncan's Mt. Tzouhalem.
Amber Chorney is making her comeback after giving birth to a baby boy. She
placed seventh at the Nationals last year and 13th at the 1998 World
Championships in Mt. Ste-Anne, Quebec. She also has several Canada Cup
podiums and top-10 NORBA results on her resume.
Emily Sandwith, 18, Team Kappa's junior rider, has her eye on road nationals
and qualifying for the Western Canada Games this year. In 2002 she placed
10th at junior road nationals and was named provincial road and criterium
champion. She has won the Victoria School Cycling Series three times.
Kappa has added a new discipline to the team's repertoire – Blind Tandem
Racing! Shawn Marsolais, 28, was born with a degenerative eye condition. She
rides stoker on a tandem piloted by Lisa Sweeney. Marsolais retired as
competitive swimmer and is now on track to compete in tandem cycling at the
2004 Paralympics in Greece. Marsolais and Sweeney will compete at Nationals
and hope to participate at the 2003 World Championships in Quebec.
Team Kappa welcomes back its dedicated sponsors: Kappa, Quadra Wood
