June 11, 2004 – Mount Seymour welcomes the Team Coastal Hill Climb
Championship Road Race on Saturday, July 10, 2004. Road cyclists,
triathletes and recreational road riders will
have the opportunity to participate in one of
North Vancouver’s premier championship hill
climbing events.

The start line begins at Parkgate Community Centre at the base of Mount
Seymour. Riders will go off with their respective category each challenging
the clock while climbing all the way to the top of the steep,
unforgiving and twisting 12.2K Mount Seymour Parkway Road. Lush forests
and spectacular views of Vancouver and the Pacific Ocean surround the
well-paved road. Mount Seymour has long been regarded as a true climbers’
test. Top world cyclists regularly train on this challenging climb in
preparation for their cycling season. Participants and spectators may enjoy
the services and shops of the Parkgate Village as well as the sights and
adventures of the North Shore. Past winners of the race include Olympians
Brian Walton and Roland Green.

“We anticipate approximately 250 riders from the North Shore, Lower Mainland
and surrounding areas, Interior BC, Vancouver Island as well as Washington
State and Oregon. For the serious road racers and triathletes, this event is
a great training opportunity in a controlled and supported environment. It
falls one week before BC’s Superweek, Tour of Delta, Gastown and White Rock,
so for many riders it is the perfect time to get in an intense training
session prior to their taper week,” said Barb Zimich, race organizer for the
past 11 years, Team Coastal/Workolopis.com member and Masters UCI Road
Race World Champion.

100% of the proceeds from the event will support
our growing pool of talented women
cyclists who strive to represent Canada at the World Masters Games in
Edmonton, July 2005.

“Historically, women’s cycling has not received the attention or funding
required to encourage participation and develop high-level performers. Our
provincial, national and international governing associations have recently
been introducing partially funded programs for women cyclists. Funding
gaps, however, still remain a major concern for women cyclists.

“To represent Canada at world class cycling events, women require funding
assistance for quality training, race travel and equipment. They also
require top-notch events and challenges like the Team Coastal Hill Climb.
This event and its sponsors will support the
development a competitive women’s cycling team to
represent Canada at next year’s World Masters
Games in
Edmonton,” said Zimich.

A Roger Sumner Trophy will be awarded to Junior racers and prize money to
the top Cat 3 rider. Pre-registration is offered at Dizzy Cycles in North
Vancouver, Caps Cycles in Surrey as well as online at
www.teamcoastalcycling.com. The pre-registration sign up fee is $20.00 or
$25.00 on race day. Race day registration/sign on begins at 8:30 a.m. The
start times begin at 10:00 a.m.

If driving in from Vancouver or the south, head west on Hwy #1, cross the
Second Narrows Bridge, take the third exit (#22) onto Mount Seymour Parkway
and follow the signs to the provincial Park. Turn left at Mount Seymour Road
(at Mohawk Station). Turn left on Banff Court to the Parkgate Community
Centre.
