October 30, 2008 – Two Team BC BMX athletes headed to the new Canadian Sports Center facility at the Camosun College Interurban Campus in Victoria on October 28 to carry out a variety of tests. Read on for their impressions of the tests and the new, state-of-the-art facility.
Today I met Adam and Scott down at the new Canadian Sports Center facility at the Camosun College Interurban Campus. It was all of our first time at the facility so it was pretty cool to get to look around. They have two really nice gyms, one for public use and one for the high performance athletes. Both all brand new, top of the line, and lots of equipment. They also have a recovery room a bunch of offices and a testing lab. Scott and I were the first two Team BC athletes (aka test pilots) to do two of a number of different tests the team will be doing this year.
Today we were doing isokinetic power output test, which consist of 4-6 second sprints, and then two standing start 6 second sprints, a 15sec, 30sec, 1min, and 4min.
I was really looking forward to the testing, I haven’t done much of it before so I was interested to see how it would go.
The testing was definitely hard, specially the 15sec and longer. I don’t think I’ve ever sprinted for longer than 20second. But it was good none the less. I think it will better once we get the results back and figure out what it all means.
All in all it was a good day, and just one more step towards high performance in team BC.

Today I woke up much to early to think I was going to have a good day at testing! The new sport center is much better than the old one that was stuffed away in a corner at UVIC. Although I was passed out on the floor during the tour, by the sounds of it, the facility is very nice!
The first test we did was good, a quick 6 second full out sprint but the thing I noticed is that I wasn’t fully recovered in the 2.5 minutes we had before the next, also staying seated was a little different as well! After not having a proper recovery I started feeling dizzy and light headed so I took a little longer break than they wanted!
The second test felt much better being able to pedal out of the saddle and having no limit to what your rpm could reach! After feeling sick again after the 3rd sprint of that test I had to call it quits as I definitely wouldn’t have been able to finish the 1min, and 4 minute sprint!
Overall the testing was pretty good but I wish I had felt 100% for it all so I could finish all the tests but maybe next time.
Scott Erwood.
