z Canada’s Woods Second on the Podium at UCI Junior Race Season Opener in Albstadt – Johnston 8th

Tags:

May 18, 2019 (Albstadt, Germany) – The UCI Junior Series cross-country season opener saw Canada’s Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain Factory Team) on the podium finishing second in the Junior men’s 5-lap race while Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) delivered a top-10 result placing 8th in the Junior women’s 4-lap competition.

Woods, the reigning Junior MTB and CX champ, led the charge in the 134-rider field and found himself in a 3-way battle with Britain’s Charlie Aldridge and Lukas Malezsewski from Belgium, who joined the Canuck. On the final lap Malezsewski was dropped as Woods and Aldridge delivered a dramatic finish as the duo were together on the final downhill heading to the grass meadow before the pump track.

They both wanted to be first at the last section before the finish line, and the ensuing sprint resulted in them touching bars and crashing hard. Aldridge was able to get back on the bike faster and took the win at 13 seconds ahead of Carter, who crossed the line with crooked handlebars but still 11 seconds clear of Malezsewski.

“The three of us were riding together and I put in a few attacks because I didn’t want it to come down to a sprint,” commented Woods. “Right before the final corners, we were sprinting side by side, and I got pushed into the metal barricades. When we hopped back on our bikes, his handlebars were straight and mine were twisted, so that was it. It’s pretty cool [to have this series], it’s motivating. I felt good during the race, it was just a little bit of bad luck.”

In the women’s race the fast start dominated by Jaqueline Schneebeli (Sui) Swiss Cycling saw Johnston fighting back as she gained positions thru the race pushing into the top 10.

Making her European debut Johnston moved up to sixth ending up 8th at the finish for a strong international start to her young career. Schneebeli was unstoppable taking a decisive solo victory with Germany’s Luisa Daubermann (Gessertshausen) in second and Ronja Blöchlinger (Switzerland) Fischer-BMC in third.

“Emilly and Carter both did a great job in their respective races. It’s always great when aspiring young riders are able to come to Europe and gain experience with bigger fields and fiercer competition. I know the lessons learned here will help them perform better in the future,” commented Dan Proulx, MTB Head Coach, Cycling Canada.

Chernove.2 Wins Gold at UCI Para-cycling Track Worlds as Canada Brings Home 5 Medals

Tags:

March 16, 2019 (Apeldoorn, Netherlands) – Team Canada concluded the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships on Saturday in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, with gold and silver medals, bringing the total number of medals for the event to five – one gold, two silver and two bronze.

In the men’s C2 category, Tristen Chernove finished his world championships by winning the Scratch Race, adding to the silver medal he won on Thursday in the Individual Pursuit, and the bronze medal on Friday in the 1000 metre time trial.  In addition, Chernove topped the standings in the first ever Omnium; a compilation of points over four events.  The Omnium in Apeldoorn is a test event for possible inclusion at the 2024 Paralympics, so no medals were awarded.

“It was a super fun day,” said Chernove.  “I always love bunch racing, so this is the event I was most excited about.  To come away with a victory in the Scratch, I feel thrilled.  It was a great race that finished in a bunch sprint, and to take home the jersey for the Scratch was my goal coming here.  And to win the Omnium was a bonus.”

In the women’s C4 competition, Keely Shaw won her first ever world championship medal, finishing second in the Individual Pursuit to Emily Petricola of Australia, who set a world record.  Marie-Claude Molnar finished just out of the medals in fourth place for the same event.  Molnar finished third overall in the Omnium standings; Shaw did not compete in all four events.

“I really excited for the outcome,” said Shaw.  “I don’t think any of us were expecting this, so when I realized I was racing for the world title, I was super excited.”

Ross Wilson was fifth in the C1 men’s Scratch Race, to finish third overall in the Omnium standings.

Sebastian Travers, Para Head Coach at Cycling Canada, said, “It was a very good Worlds for us.  If we include the Omnium podiums, we tied our best Worlds ever.  This is great to see in our athletes, one year away from the Paralympic Games.  Although we haven’t put everything together for peak performances, I happy to see how everyone worked together as a team.  I have been relying on personal coaches as well as national coaches to get our athletes ready, and everyone has done an amazing job.We developed a four year mission plan following Rio and we continue to progress according to this plan. We are confident that this will lead to key performances in Tokyo 2020 .”

Mike Barry Sr. Celebration of Life Jan. 5

Tags:

January 01, 2019 (Toronto, ON) – Michael John Barry, father, grandfather, husband and a pillar of Canada’s cycling community, died on Dec. 29 at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 80. Born in Wimbledon, England in 1938 to Percival and Eva Fanny (Vardill) Barry, Mike was a builder of communities, an inexhaustible source of knowledge of all aspects of cycling and a mentor to countless people. Although, quiet and modest, he was loath to take credit for his many achievements or his profound influence.

Mike Barry Sr. 1938-2018 © Mariposa Bicycles
Mike’s association with cycling began with London’s derelict bombsites which he scavenged for bicycle parts following the Second World War. Resold, some of the better parts funded his cycling, which started when he was 10, or they became the foundation of what ultimately was an extensive collection.

After serving in the Royal Air Force, and racing on its cycling team, Mike moved to Canada in 1965. While he was traveling throughout the world as a spectrometer technician, Mike and his friend John Palmer purchased a collection of bicycle tubing that had once belonged to C.C.M. In 1969, Mariposa Number One emerged from a rented basement workshop. Nearly 50 years later, and somewhat to Mike’s amazement, Mariposas continue to be hand built in Toronto.

Along with Mariposa, Mike co-founded, with Mike Brown, Bicyclesport which set a new standard for bike stores in Canada. While Mike was in the bicycle business, he never regarded himself as a businessman. Mariposa, Bicyclesport and his subsequent shops became the birthplace of several bicycle clubs and teams for both adults and children. Mike, along with his wife Clare (Lapp) Barry, who he married in 1972, volunteered as race organizers and officials.

But above all, Mike was a source of inspiration, knowledge and guidance and witty conversation for generations of cyclists ranging from commuters and bike couriers to elite road racers. He changed many of their lives. The only cycling discipline that never attracted his attention was mountain biking.

Mike was also a keen runner completing the Boston Marathon in 1981.

Mike and Clare’s son Michael inherited his love of cycling. Along with his wife Dede (Demet) Barry, Michael continues to run Mariposa. Their children, Liam Barry and Ashlin Barry both joined their grandfather on rides.

Until several weeks ago, Mike was riding his regular route from north of the Metro Toronto Zoo to Annina’s Bakeshop in Goodwood, Ontario. As always, he ordered tea and an Eccles cake.

A funeral will take place at Rosedale United Church, Saturday January 5 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to the World Bicycle Relief or the Bicycles For Humanity.

Pedal Magazine’s 2018 Cycling Awards – Tight Battles Unfolding

Tags:

canada flagDecember 29, 2018 (Toronto, ON) – Voting is well underway in ALL categories for Pedal Magazine‘s Annual 2018 Cycling Awards honouring Canada’s top riders from this past season.

The race for Best Overall Cyclist (Male or Female) is a 3-way battle between Michael Woods, Emily Batty and Shelley Gautier all duking it out for the top spot. Woods is currently leading but the chasers are close behind.

Batty and Woods are leading the Best Overall Senior/U23 Female and Male categories but Karol-Ann Canuel and the Men’s Team Pursuit are challenging, with Hugo Barrette and Maghalie Rochette also in the mix.

The Junior Men’s and Women’s races are also very close with Simone Boilard leading the junior women’s category, while in the junior men it’s a virtual three-way tie with Colton Woods, Ben Katerberg neck and neck, and Holden Jones nipping at their heels.

It’s Men vs Women for the Best Track Senior Cyclist (Male or Female) award as the two Team Pursuit squads are tied in the lead… but don’t count out Derek Gee or Allison Beveridge just yet.

Batty may lock up the Best MTB XC Senior/U23 Cyclist (Male or Female) but Raphael Gagne and Catharine Pendrel are in the hunt and may turn the tables on her when the dust settles.

It’s almost a mirror image for the Best CX Senior/U23 Cyclist (Male or Female) with Ruby West vs Jenn Jackson for the lead followed closely by Maghalie Rochette.

And Daina Tuchscherer may dethrone Tory Nyhaug for the Best BMX Cyclist (Male or Female) while Gautier battles Tristan Chernove, Charlse Moreau and Michael Sametz for the Best Paracycling Cyclist (Male or Female).

It’s still too early to call anything so don’t miss your chance to make your voice heard and recognize ALL of the top talent in Canada from juniors, to seniors, to U23’s and paracyclists – from all disciplines including road, MTB, DH, cyclocross, track and BMX.

Plus there are some fun categories as well including your Favourite Cycling Coffee Shop, Bike Shop, Race/Event and Places to Ride. Winners will be selected on the basis of votes tallied from across the country at pedalmag.com.

All entrants are eligible to win one of three prizes:

* 1st prize – Pedal 1-yr. Subscription
* 2nd prize – Pedal Hat

LIVESTREAM of 2018 Canadian CX Championships on Nov. 10 via CTRE Productions

November 09, 2018 (Peterborough, Ont.) – Don’t miss the LIVESTREAM of 2018 CX Championships on Nov. 10 in Peterborough, Ont. and see who will be crowned the national champions and wear the fabled maple leaf jerseys for Masters, Junior, Under-23 and Elite categories.

2018 Shimano Canadian Cyclo-cross Championships

Running through Peterborough’s historic Nicholl’s Oval, the Shimano Canadian Cyclocross Championships carries on a tradition of bicycle racing in the park that started over 100 years ago. The key feature of the site is a sharp 20m elevation change that separates the park from the adjacent Otonabee River, sandwiched by rolling sectors above and below. Technical and challenging, course length is just over 3.0km.

While the most taxing features will no doubt be the multiple traverses of the slope between the park and river, elsewhere longer ride-ups, flat-out straights, and off-camber corners and will ensure that riders will need complete range of skills in their ‘cross toolbox to achieve success.

On Sunday, the domestic cyclo-cross season will conclude with the UCI C2 sanctioned Peterborough CX races. CTRE Productions based in Peterboroughspecializes in delivering professional high quality live streaming and production services, for corporate, music, sports and more.

Cycling Memories Served Up in Style – Québec Has it All – Problems

Tags:

June 27, 2018 (Quebec) – On your next cycling trip to Québec enjoy gourmet adventures as you experience a warm welcome at numerous pit stops whether at a bike-friendly vineyard, coffee shop, micro-brewery, cidrerie or fromagerie – Québec has it all.

MONTRÉAL – Stop #1

A cosmopolitan city, Montréal is bursting with cycling excitement and ready to serve it up in style at la Maison des cyclistes, a great meeting spot for cyclists where you can enjoy a café while sourcing a goldmine of information at their travel agency and boutique offering a wide selection of books, guides, maps and accessories for cyclists including advice. Located at the crossroads of two major bike paths in Montréal this is the nerve centre of Québec’s cycling culture and a key hub for cycling enthusiasts!

Route verte http://cyclingquebec.com/en/the-route-verte

OUTAOUAIS – Stop #2

An hour’s drive northwest from Montreal, in the eastern part of the Outaouais region, is the green oasis of Petite-Nation La Lièvre with 129km of prime destination for those in search of an authentic local experience including beer, chocolate and cheese.

For years, Alain Boyer made cheese at Fromagerie in Plaisance, and then went in another directionŠ without ever forgetting his trade. In 2011, stars realigned. Fromagerie Montebello was born in the heart of the Petite-Nation, to cheese lovers’ delight who first adopted Tête à Papineau cheese enthusiastically. Since their opening they have received several awards for their quality cheeses.

Montebello was part of the only seigneury in Petite-Nation, in Outaouais and other artisanal cheeses such as Rébellion 1837, Manchebello and Adoray, acknowledge the wealth of the region’s history.

Only in Montebello you’ll also find les Brasseurs de Montebello featuring a refreshing array of local beers and a delightful chocolate Economuseum for a gourmet snack where passionate local artisans and producers are eager to share their love of their craft.

EASTERN TOWNSHIPS – Stop #3

East of Montreal you’ll find the 106.5 km Coaticook Valley circuit in the Eastern Townships featuring artisans and agricultural landscapes along with a reputation as a must-try destination for ice cream, micro-brews and honey.

Along the way, you’ll come across the Laiterie de Coaticook where you can stop for a real-milk ice cream treat and regain some energy. Continue your ride and take in the Fromagerie La Station de Compton, as well as the villages of Saint-Venant-de-Paquette and East Hereford; take the opportunity to walk the Pioneer Trail. This historical tour, winding through all of the villages on your route, will introduce you to significant historical figures from the area.

Try the 44km Compton loop, you will find cassis, orchards, a multi-awarded cheesemaker, a village café with the Créateur de saveurs certification, and a public market on Thursday evenings (until September 28). Check out Café de Village, a network of cafés that double as welcoming committees, where you’ll find Que du Bonheur, another great rest stop. If you turn toward Sherbrooke instead, you will discover Ferme Beaulieu, a vineyard, village cafés, as well as creative chefs.

MONTÉRÉGIE – Stop #4

The 2018 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships p/b Quebecor for Para, Junior, Under-23 and Elite riders will begin on Thursday in the beautiful Saguenay region of Quebec. Athletes have traveled from all over Canada and around the world to compete in the Time Trial, Road Race and Criterium events for the maple jersey awarded to the winners in each category.

First up will be the Individual Time Trial, with riders racing against the clock on a rolling course north of Chicoutimi, over distances ranging from 11.02 kilometres to 37.2 kilometres.

Shelley Gautier © Dave Holland/Canadian Paralympic Committee
Among the riders to watch will be Para world champion Shelley Gautier (women’s T1), three-time Elite women’s Team Time Trial world champion Karol-Ann Canuel and Svein Tuft in the Elite men; Tuft is going for a remarkable 11th national title in his final year of racing before retiring from professional competition.

On Friday, the Para and Junior men and women will compete in their Road Race events, taking place on a 15-kilometre circuit in and around the town of La Baie, completing between two and eight laps, depending on category.

Leah Kirchmann © Cor Vos
Saturday, will see the Under-23 and Elite categories for women and men compete in their Road Races, with the women completing eight laps (120.8 kilometres) and the men 12 laps (181.2 kilometres).  The women’s field contains tremendous depth, with professional riders entered including Leah Kirchmann (Team Sunweb), Karol-Ann Canuel (Boels Dolman), Kirsti Lay (Rally Cycling), Sara Bergen (Rally Cycling), Alison Jackson (Tibco-SVB) and Annie Foreman-Mackey (The Cyclery). A new champion will be crowned as Allison Beveridge (Rally Cycling), the defending champ, is unfortunately recovering from a broken arm and will not be on the start line.

The men’s race should be a battle between the two North American-based professional teams – Silber Pro Cycling and Rally Cycling – however, European-based professionals Antoine Duchesne (Groupama-FDJ) and Svein Tuft (Michelton Scott) could definitely be a factor along with recent Tour de Beauce winner James Piccoli (Elevate-KHS) and KOM winner Benjamin Perry (Israel Cycling Academy). Former road national road champ, Guillaume Boivin (Israel Cycling Academy), is also a non-starter due to an injured knee from an unfortunate accident with an automobile.

The Championships conclude on Sunday with the Criterium Challenge, a fast-paced spectator favourite, taking place on a 1.6 kilometre circuit through the streets of Chicoutimi. Junior and Elite (including Under-23) women and men will race for between 30 and 60 minutes, with the finish usually coming down to a high speed mass sprint for the line.
