Multiple Podiums for McGill Cycling Riders at ECCC Race #4 in Pennsylvania

Tags:

April 22, 2019 (Shippensburg, PA) – Round 4 of the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) series was in full swing in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania two weekends ago. Four riders from the McGill Cycling Team made the almost 9-hour journey from Montréal to South-Central Pennsylvania to enjoy some (mostly) amazing weather and a weekend full of racing while attaining some impressive results in the process.

Felix Fournier ready to race © McGill Cycling
The weekend featured three races over two days, starting off with a 3.6 km circuit race on Saturday afternoon (April 12). Strong winds and rolling hills meant everyone had to leave everything they had out on the course. In the Men’s B field Félix Fournier did just that, fighting through illness to finish an applaudable 15th place. Later on, in the Men’s A race was a race completely flipped upside down as a result of the strong winds, causing small groups to form all over road. An untimely chain drop caused Nick Kleban to lose contact with the leaders before eventually pulling out of the race while Felix Oestereich, despite suffering a slow leak in his rear tire, powered through to finish 13th at the finish line. However, the highlight of the circuit race for the team was Mary Hnatyshyn who in her first race in the Women’s A field, finished with the lead group of riders to finish an amazing 4th place.

Afterwards, the gang refuelled, regrouped and reaped the benefits in preparation for the second race of the weekend, a 10 km mass-start hill climb race. The course was comprised of an approximately 6 km shallow gradient climb sandwiched by flat stretches at the start and finish, which meant drafting and tactics would still be of utmost importance for success in this race. Félix F grinded out a solid 6th place finish from a strong group that broke away from the rest of Men’s B field. In the Men’s A race, Felix O just couldn’t catch a break, suffering a flat tire right at the base of the climb.

Nick on the other hand, broke free, attacking and going clear of the Men’s A field with one other rider on one of steeper sections of the course. Eventually caught by another rider on the flat run-in to the finish, Nick finished an impressive 3rd place.

The Women’s A race did not disappoint either, with Mary again crushing it to finish an outstanding 2nd place, dropping the third place rider by a whole two seconds in the final sprint to the line in the process.

Sunday called for the final and main event of the weekend, the Shippensburg Scurry road race. The race was destined to be an exciting one, boasting a course containing the infamous Horse Killer Road climb, a brutally steep climb said to test the guts of any rider who attempts it. Mix that in with thunderstorms on race day and you get a recipe for one spicy race!

Nicolas Kleban © McGill Cycling
In the Men’s B race, Félix bounced back great from the day previous and put in an amazing effort to roll across the line in 4th place. In the Men’s A race, Nick raced with everything he had, attacking the Horse Killer climb every lap until eventually a 6 man breakaway formed going over the climb with 20 km to go. Unfortunately this was still not enough to catch the early breakaway and Nick sprinted to come 2nd out of his group and a regardless impressive 4th on the day.

Finally, in the Women’s A race, Mary again put on a show, snagging her second podium finish of the weekend by coming across the line in a phenomenal 3rd place in only her second ever road race.

Overall, it was a successful weekend for the squad, with multiple podium finishes and strong results across the board! The team now hunkers down for final exams before heading to Vermont in two weeks for ECCC championships.

Sad News – OCA Commissaire Al Norley Passes Away

Tags:

April 22, 2019 (Toronto, ON) – We’re sorry to report that long-time OCA Commissaire, Al Norley, nicknamed “Father Time”, passed away at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto on April 14. Norley was a fixture on the Ontario race scene for many years and was known for his time-keeping skills and story telling.

He worked with many race organizers before chip timing and was renowned for his double glasses. During his heyday he covered all cycling disciplines including mountain biking, road, and track events across the province and continued working with the Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club in the latter part of his career.

“Al Norley was certainly the best equipped of us when it came to time-keeping at the track,” commented fellow Commissaire, Brad Day. “It was his specialty and he was always assigned as timekeeper at the events we officiated together at the Wind-Del Velodrome near Delhi.”

“For many years, the Commissaire section of the OCA Handbook contained a classic picture of Al doing the timing at the Velodrome as an example of a Commissaire in action. He represented us well, we felt, and always will,” continued Day.

Adam Ruppel from Chico Racing remembered Norley’s amazing spirit. “Al was a great guy, a jeweller from the past. Always happy to help he had an amazing spirit, and loved timing, watches and cycling. He has been an icon in cycling forever. The type of person who always showed up on time, did his best and was just a salt of the earth guy.”

Ontario Commissaire, Dan Visentin told us that Al was in his thoughts recently. “Sorry to hear Al passed away… probably him tapping me on my shoulder. I worked many races and events with him back in the day… ’88-’95. My favourite memory was driving to Windsor together for the 1994 Ontario Provincial Road Championships. He did all the driving … and most of the talking as well lol! He was a wonderful friend and mentor. Wayne Willis worked with him as well,” recounted Visentin.

Norley knew everyone and his reputation was known outside the province as well. “I had not seen him for almost 20 years,” said Louise Lalonde, UCI Commissaire from Quebec. “Sad to hear he passed away.”

Story telling was a Norley trademark. “Of course one of the best things about working with Al was listening to the stories he would tell us and there was never a shortage of those that we would gladly enjoy during our breaks at the finish line whether it was at the mountain bike, road or track events,” added Day.

“There was never a better way to spend time huddled under a tent during a rain delay than to try to prompt Al to give us one more entertaining tale from his earlier years as a race official. It seemed like he knew almost everyone in the Cycling Hall of Fame and could tell you about some interesting tidbit or two from a time when they crossed paths. And of course his commanding voice made listening all that much better,” he concluded.

There are no details as of yet regarding his funeral and Celebration of Life.

Pedal joins the cycling community in sending condolences to Norley’s family and friends.

“The course was is mint conditions to the point that we walked the farm field in our running shoes. But what a spring day in southern Ontario can bring…from 16 degrees Saturday night setting up the start-finish line to brutal conditions of 1 degrees with rain and snow,” said organizer Blake Ellis.

Record Performances at 2019 U17/Junior/Para Track Nationals – Bradbury and Bibic Each Win 7 Golds

April 15, 2019 (Milton, ON) – Record-breaking performances highlighted the 2019 Canadian U17/Junior/Para Track Championships that took place April 12-14, as the Mattamy National Cycling Centre hosted a weekend of racing in Milton, Ontario. A record 111 athletes from five provinces took part in the Championships, where five Canadian records were broken in individual and team events.

In addition to winning the prestigious maple leaf jersey of national champion, the Championships served as part of the selection process for the team that will represent Canada at the Junior Track World Championships later in the year.

Nine athletes won multiple titles, led by two Under-17 riders, each with seven titles in the ten events contested. Nicole Bradbury (NCCH Elite p/b MGCC) dominated the U17 women’s category with seven gold medals, a silver, a bronze and a Canadian record in the Individual Pursuit. Bradbury had won the first round of the Mountain Bike Canada Cup a couple of weeks earlier, so admitted she lacked some confidence going into the Track Nationals. “Coming back from mountain biking, I hadn’t been on the track in a couple of weeks, so I wasn’t quite sure how I would perform. My goal was to do well in the IP [Individual Pursuit] and break the record, and I had mostly been training for the endurance races.”

Bibic
In the U17 men’s category, Dylan Bibic (Ascent Cycling p/b MGCC) also won seven gold, plus two silver and bronze, as well as setting Canadian records in the 200 metre time trial and the Team Sprint. Other performances worthy of note were the four gold medals each for Junior riders Madison Dempster (Team Ontario) in the women’s field and Riley Pickrell (Cycling BC) in the men’s.

In the Para categories, national titles were awarded in the Individual Pursuit and 500/1000 metre time trials. Marie-Claude Molnar (Equipe du Quebec) took both titles in the women’s C4 category, with Megan Miller and her pilot Candice Moote (School for the Blind) winning the women’s tandem events, and Matthieu Croteau-Daigle and his pilot Benoit Lussier (Équipe du Québec) winning the men’s tandem events.

Rock the Ridge Volume 1 Launches April 28 – Epic Gravel Racing

Tags:

April 13, 2019 (Maple Ridge, BC) – After nearly 20 years of road racing in the City’s of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Race the Ridge has turned the page to embrace changing times and to highlight the regions world class gravel race potential with the debut of Rock the Ridge Volume 1 on April 28.

 © Local Ride Racing
“The original Race the Ridge started back in 1999 and was actually planned to be an epic 100km mountain bike race utilizing the amazing trails and gravel road access in the area. After too many permit rejections, I looked to the roads and the stage race as we now know began,” commented Barry Lyster.

Then back in the fall of 2018, the City of Maple Ridge approached Lyster to discuss how to increase cycle tourism. Lyster discussed the growing participation in Gravel Racing and how Maple Ridge could be home to a very special event.

The 2019, Rock the Ridge Volume 1 will be the start of a 5-year plan to become a 100 km + epic cycling gravel event. For this year, there will be two mass-start races. A 75km race will be home for the Open Men and Open Women Categories with cash prizes being offered for the top 5 men and women. There will also be a 50 km open ride which will also include a Boys and Girls Open Youth Challenge for those U17 and under riders.

“I was hoping to have included some of the hills to the east for this year’s race, but as was the case in 1999, we are still dealing with access issues. But this time the difference is that these public and private land owners are open to discussing my proposals and I believe we will be able to access more areas in 2020.”
