May 04, 2013 (Sun Peaks, BC) – We just got word that Sun Peaks Resort has in fact cancelled the XC event at Can MTB Cup #3 – see below. We understand that Cycling Canada will be releasing an official statement soon.
While nothing official has been announced it appears that the XC event at round three of the 2013 Canada MTB Cup series to be held at Sun Peaks Resort, originally scheduled for June 29, has been cancelled due to poor registration numbers. The DH Cup event is still on but has been moved from June 30 to one week later on July 7 according to the Cycling Canada web site.
Apparently numbers have been in decline for a number of years and it’s unclear if a replacement event is in the works. Sun Peaks is now offering a Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Course June 28-30 – read more here. The selection criteria for the MTB Worlds (Junior and U23) have apparently been updated as well to reflect the cancellation and the notices are going out shortly.
After careful consideration Sun Peaks has decided not to go ahead with the Canada Cup XC. After many years of hosting these races throughout 1999- today we have seen a serious decline in registration and can’t continue to payout the cash required for prizing and CCA fee’s based on such low registration. As we discussed traditional XCO style racing has seen a massive decline in this area in favor of more marathon style races.
