Steamworks Tour de Gastown – Men\’s Crit

July 24, 2003 (Vancouver, BC) – With over 2,500 cowbells cheering them on (Saturn distributed them to the crowd earlier) the pro men's field at the Steamworks Tour de Gastown stormed the streets of Vancouver in search of the night's winnings.

Twilight approached as the men's field put on another show for the 28,000 spectators that littered the entire course from start to finish. The men's field maxed out at just fewer than one hundred and twenty riders. The Saturn team was back to defend their title and Prime Alliance, Health Net, Symmetrics, Broadmark Capital, Gears Racing, Navigators, Jelly Belly and Ontario's Atlas Cold/Ital Pasta were primed to take it away in the men's race.

The men's race got off to a fast start with the pack stringing out into single file going into lap two. Most riders in the pack figured that Eric Wohlberg would attempt to make a solo attack, which he did in the first five laps, but was reeled in within one lap. Wohlberg remained pretty quiet for the rest of the race and was reportedly dealing with an injured wrist

Canadian Gord Fraser, who crashed the last time he raced this event in 1993, was backed up by a team of seven riders on the Health Net team. Fraser was really enthusiastic about being back, and determined to win the race from the very beginning.

Up and coming rider Cam Evans (Broadmark Capital) was also enthusiastic and won a few of the primes along with Prime Alliance's Danny Pate, and Trek-Volkswagen's Eddy Gragus.

The men's race saw many attempted breaks, attacks and short-lived solo attempts, none that were successful. Jelly Belly, Broadmark, Symmetrics, Navigators and Prime Alliance gave Health Net a run for their money, but in the final lap Fraser gave it his all in the pack sprint and walked away with the win. Alex Candelario (Prime Alliance) and Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) were second and third respectively.
