August 7, 2009 – Every year, the Women’s Sports Foundation recognizes an individual and team Sportswoman whose performances over a 12-month time span have been exceptional. Criteria is based on new records and world championships won – voting is currently underway
Each year we give you a chance to help us recognize those superhuman efforts that distinguish two champion athletes (one individual, one team) as your Sportswoman of the Year. It’s up to you to vote and decide who should be honored for their outstanding accomplishments. Athletes were considered for the 2009 award based on their athletic achievements between August 1, 2008 and July 31, 2009. Results from the 2008 Olympic Games were not considered as they were included in last year’s awards program.
Some of the nominees include Serena Williams (Tennis, USA), Stephanie Gilmore (Surfing, AUS), Yu-Na Kim (Figure Skating, KOR), Lorena Ochoa (Golf, MEX), Kerron Stewart (Athletics, JAM), Lindsey Vonn (Alpine Skiing, USA), and Lindsey Jacobellis (Snowboard Cross, USA). The 2008 winner was gymnast Nastasia Liukin.
Award winners will be announced on October 13, 2009 and honored at the Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. To submit your vote, click here.
