Specialized 2010 — Road Sneak Preview 2

July 10, 2009 (Salt Lake City, Utah) — While Day 1 of the Specialized Global Press Road Launch focused on the men’s high performance road segment, Day 2 in Salt Lake City focused on both the women’s road market, the parts and accessories lineup and a brand new bike designed with ergonomics in mind.

S-Works Amira
Following up on the launch of the all new Tarmac SL3, Specialized launched an entirely new top-end women’s bike called the Amira.
Designed specifically for racing, the Amira has women’s specific geometry, but with a carbon build similar to the men’s Tarmac SL3. Using similar technologies the Amira features a tapered fork steerer (from 1-1/8″ at the top to 1-3/8″ at the crown) for a stiffer front end. The bottom bracket is also oversized for more stiffness, but Specialized’s designers add that the Amira is also compliant for a more female-friendly ride. All of the tubes are size-specific, including the smallest offerings in the lineup.
The Specialized Ruby has also been largely redesigned for 2010 with a new endurance-focused geometry to make it a more comfortable bike over longer distances, similar to how the Roubaix compliments the Tarmac.

BG Roulux
As the first bike designed under the Body Geometry label, the Roulux is completely focused on being ergonomically-friendly for any rider. Offered in both a men’s and women’s version, the bikes offer dual suspension and have neutral position handlebars, a Roulux dual-density saddle, Varus Wedge platform pedals, and unique downtube-mounted mirrors. The bike was designed by legendary blood flow specialist Roger Minkow.

Parts and Accessories
In the helmet segment, Specialized is introducing a HeadSet dial-operated fitting system. It comes in two variations – the SL and the SX depending on the level of helmet, and both can be operated with one finger while wearing the helmet.

New for 2010 is that the TT2 Time Trial helmet is now available to the public. It maintains the Specialized large front ventilation opening, but the helmet was designed in wind tunnel to allow the airflow to continue out the back. It’s available in two sizes – XS/S and M/L.

For shoes, the big news was the re-introduction of the S-Works Road shoe for men and the introduction of a similar top-level shoe for women.

The S-Works Road weighs in at just 225gr (pair of 42) for men and 205gr (pair of women 39) for the ladies. Both offer a completely new Boa closure system now with independent dials. They have carbon soles with replaceable heal treads. Also available is the Trivent, a highly-ventilated triathlon shoe with the replaceable heel treads and a tongue-less design.

In saddles, Minkow’s input was also instrumental in designing the Romin seat. The new curved saddle is designed to give better blood flow in an aero position on the bike with medium-rated lightweight padding. The top-end Toupe saddle is now offered in a full carbon SL version with oversized carbon rails, a carbon shell and super light padding. It comes in at less than 110 grams.

In keeping with the high performance theme, the Specialized chamois is now being offered in a thinner and lighter SL version designed for shorter rides. There’s also the RBX chamois designed for longer rides where a bit more cushion is desired. These two chamois offerings make up the basis for the BG Pro RBX and SL men’s and women’s bibs.

Specialized is expanding its Solar Jet line, which is made of UPF 50 sun-screening fabric. There will be long and short sleeve jerseys, which offer a full zipper, three rear pockets and wire ports for music players – as well as arm warmers, hats, and other items down the road.

There’s also a new Eureka Element jersey and jacket for cold-weather riding and a new heavy-rain jacket called the AquaVeto.

Finally, in road tires, brand new for 2010 is the Turbo line, which is offered in both a Tubeless and Race version. The Tubeless has a carbon bead, 127 TPI and all the benefits of the relatively new road tubeless technology. The Turbo Race has a 220 TPI casing, dual compound tread and weighs just 190 grams.
