March 12, 2007 (Madrid, Spain) — As expected, Judge Antonio Serrano, declared today that the vast Puerto doping scandal investigation will be closed according to a report by AFP. “At the time that the incidents took place (in 2006), Spanish law did not prohibit, with penalties, (these) doping practices,” indicated the judge. This decision can still be appealed by the prosecution.
It is therefore up to the sporting federations to impose sanctions on athletes implicated in the scandal.
UCI president, Pat McQuaid, indicated to AFP Sunday that the international cycling body obtained permission to receive or see all of the Puerto documents. He indicated that this information could be used to launch disciplinary actions against the implicated cyclists. To do this, the UCI must wait until it is certain that Serrano’s decision is not appealed.
“It’s not over yet,” declared McQuaid.
