November 04, 2012 – In these sensitive and turbulent times regarding doping we were a bit wary when got wind on Saturday of a doping confession by a Canadian rider who apparently posted his admission on a web site called Sorry I Doped.com and on his Facebook page. The web site didn’t seem to offer any verification procedure or other expected protocols so we contacted retired road cyclist, Matt Guse, who made the apparent confession as we were suspicious of the circumstances.
Guse, formerly with Calyon-Litespeed and Team RACE, was noted as having taken…”EPO, blood transfusions, cortisone, testosterone, Clenbuterol, Actovegin, rhinoceros horn, and PCP. I did not want to use these products but I was driven by unbridled ambition to win at any cost. I took these products between November 1999 and March 2009.”
Today Guse confirmed it was a joke gone bad. “No, it’s not real. I took it off my Facebook page pretty quick,” Guse told Pedal. “Turns out francophones didn’t get the sarcasm. I was quite surprised some sites ran with it without contacting me.”
Further investigation of the Sorry I Doped website revealed that it’s very easy to post confessions using somebody else’s name. Also on the same website are “confessions” from Lance Armstrong and George W. Bush.
During Armstrong’s bout with USADA we received an email saying he’d confessed with a link to the The Onion, which turns out to be an award-winning satirical site in the US. Another confession on the Onion comes from Lance’s bike…
Readers should be wary of any such news on the web that is intended as tongue in cheek.
