Shimano\’s Smoother Shifts for 2005

November 18, 2004 – At a recent Shimano Press Camp in Tucson, Arizona the company introduced their plans for their “Dual Control Lever” system. Shimano’s “Dual Control Lever” system was first introduced on XTR-laden rides around 2002. Setting a new standard for shifting ease and swiftness the DCL’s acceptance into the mountain bike world has gained ground at a steady rate, and the system is now being introduced into all aspects of mountain biking by Shimano. It will now encompass XTR, Saint, Deore XT, LX and the brand new Hone line.

Initiated with a secondary release lever, which acted like a “rapid-fire”, Shimano wanted to make the transition to the DCL a smooth one. Allowing shifting and braking action from several positions on the handlebar the DCL is actually equipped with a reach adjust mechanism upon their revised lever shape. The distance from the handlebar grip to the lever can be adjusted, taking into account different hand sizes and finger lengths.

The three internal sets of ball bearings within the indexing drum is what provides the effortless and responsive stroke of the DCL. Combine this with the new SIS-SP41 casing which comes with a silicon-based grease and the drive-train already has a head start.

Adding to the a refined Shimano drive-train is the Hyperglide sprockets which have specifically positioned shift ramps and tooth profiles for improved chain control during shifting. As well the SG-X gearing design groups the chainrings, derailleur and design of the chain into one, all in the name of precision. These features are now available with all MTB groups.

“Grouping” it all together is the inclusion of the low normal rear derailleur design. It allows the left and right shifters to shift up and down by the same operation, providing intuitive shifting, via a “return spring” that enhances inward shifting. Spring tension allows shifting at an exact point, making entrance into the shifting gate a smooth one, as well as reducing noise and lessening strain on the overall drive-train.
