March 23, 2007 – The second Provincial Team training camp concluded today after three days in Victoria. The camp included a hill climb time trial and a flat time trial, with some skill efforts and paceline riding during hard training sessions, emphasizing fitness. This is the first real indicator of building our Provincial Team, heading towards National Championships and Western Canada Games for under-19 men and under-21 women.
The camp was run with the help of Steve Lund, the Vancouver Island Regional Coach, along with John Tilley from Kamloops, and also a big thank must be given to the many volunteers who offered their time to help. The first day was a steady ride, as many of the riders had just traveled to the Island. This was used to check out their bikes and get ready for the next two days of hard work.
The following day, the riders were set off on their hilly test day, which included two climbs of one of the local mountains. The ride started under grey skies, but the weather cleared for the hill test. Results follow below. Day three had far from ideal conditions, with riders starting their time trial effort on a cold, wet, rainy day, after an hour plus riding out to the start. All of the riders were more than enthusiastic about giving it their all for this test, and impressed the support staff with their attitude and dedication. Results for this also follow below. The camp concluded with a hard ride back to base, where riders were greeted by support staff with a post-race snack. The camp was a huge success, and it is proof that there is a lot of talent in cycling in BC. Thanks again to everyone for making this camp a success.
