December 27, 2006 — Seamus McGrath recently signed a two-year contract with Rocky Mountain Bicycles. His schedule for 2007 with the Canadian based team includes the entire World Cup circuit, the Sea Otter Classic, select NORBAs and two seven-day MTB stage races, including the inaugural Seven.
“It’s nice to be on a Canadian team again,” he said. He also commented his new team will give him the security and support to focus on performing the best he possibly can.
The 30-year-old is one of Canada’s top Senior Men’s cross country racers, but he nearly quit the sport that his been his livelihood for the past decade due to lack of team support. “Luckily Felt gave me a deal,” he said, adding without help from the bicycle manufacturer and the National Team, he would have been out in the cold for the 2006 season. McGrath was forced to pare down his usually full season to just a few races and focus on getting results to prove himself, which he did by placing third in the Commonwealth Games, fifth at the World Cup at Mt. Ste-Anne, Que. and ninth at the World Cup in Curacao, Dutch Antilles.
Now that he’s signed with Rocky Mountain for 2007 and 2008, he’s relieved. “I don’t think I would’ve been racing again next year if I wouldn’t have gotten a deal,” he said. His goal for 2007 is to be a top-five contender at MTB World Cups and a regular top-10 finisher. He’s proven he can do it, “now I want to do it on a regular basis.”
