“It was a tactical race and so I just waited for the right moment, saved my legs and then hit it hard. I just had more in the tank today,” said Kabush beaming like a kid at the finish. “My Maxxis tires were perfect for rolling on the pavement section at the finish and I was able to deliver.”
The track, modified from last year, had few climbs and mostly flat punchy straights allowing riders to gain time but several small bridges challenged some who unclipped or fell. Zandstra, who helped his teammate to victory and fell on the last lap, recovered quickly enough to also place in the top ten.
The 20-minute, 3-lap race was fast and furious as Kabush had to bridge to the lead group of five riders and then attacked after the the final bridge at 400 meters before the finish line to claim the win.
Women’s Race
Canada’s Rebecca Beaumont (Cyclone d’Alma) took home her best international result claiming 6th in the Pro Women’s race with fellow Canucks Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team) and Haley Smith (Norco Factory Team) in 8th and 9th respectively. Chloe Woodruff (USA) Stan’S No Tubes-Pivot took the win over Luna Pro teammates Georgia Gould (USA) in second with Katerina Nash (Cze) in third.
“Georgia Gould was kidding me about staying in the mix, and I tried to close the gap to her for the final lap but she didn’t wait for me (laughing),” said Beaumont. “Still I’m very happy as I’ve seen better results every week here in California this month.”
The young Quebec rider explained, “I’m living the dream – my boyfriend and I bought a VW van and traveled from Montreal to California, so I had no studies to distract me, and I’ve put a lot more work in here in the hills of California.”
Pendrel, who had a rough start, found herself further back than she planned and got stuck behind various clogs as well. Meanwhile Woodruff, Nash, Gould, Erin Huck (USA) Scott 3 Roy, Eva Lechner (Ite) Luna Pro Team and Lea Davison (USA) Specialized formed a strong lead group.
Top Canadian Emily Batty (Trek) was not on the start line opting to head to Australia for the upcoming UCI MTB World Cup in Cairns on April 23-24. With Beaumont ahead chasing the leaders, Pendrel and Smith worked together to make up ground and both landed in the top 10.
The former MTB Worlds champ who has won here before and recently had surgery on her finger made no excuses for her ride. “I thought it would be in even better condition after this time (smiling), but I’m glad I bounced back enough to compete here in California. It was pretty fast out there and after a tough start I did climb back into the race and was happy with being able to move up steadily.”
Other notable Canadian performances included Maghalie Rochette (Luna Pro Team) in 17th and Katie Button (Procity Racing) who placed 23rd – results and photos below.
