April 17, 2005 (Monterey, CA) – In the Laguna Seca Circuit Race Stage 1 Canada’s Erinne Willock (CAN, Webcor) finished just off the podium in fourth place in the women’s circuit race, which consisted of 17 laps around the Laguna Seca Raceway. Tina Pic (USA, Quark) took the win and Kristin Armstrong (USA, T-Mobile) and Christine Thorburn (USA, Webcor) finished second and third, respectively.

In the men’s race, which saw the pack thunder around the raceway 27 times, Canada’s top result was delivered by Gord Fraser (CAN, Health Net), who placed fifth. Ivan Stevic (USA, Aerospace Engineering) was elated with his win in the final four-man sprint, which gave him the stage win. Chris Wherry (USA, Health Net), David Clinger (USA, Webcor) and Doug Olerenshaw (USA, Health Net) battled it out for the rest of the podium spots, placing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Stage 2 Fort Ord Road Race
After a fifth-place finish in yesterday’s final, 222-kilometre Stage 2 Fort Ord Road Race Canadian Gord Fraser (CAN, Health Net) grabbed second overall in the Sea Otter Classic road stage race, 2:59 down from teammate and overall winner Doug Ollerenshaw (USA, Health Net).

After Stage 1, in which he placed fifth, Fraser held third in the general classification. Early in the last stage, it looked like Fraser might well have the overall wrapped. He got into a break of 15 to 20 riders with two of his teammates, and, if everything stayed together, none of the other riders were an immediate threat to his GC position.

However, something happened that changed the race plan. Ivan Stevic (USA, Aerospace Engineering), winner of Stage 1, bridged up to the break and took the lead from Fraser. Health Net needed to attack to get the lead back, so Ollerenshaw went for it. Fraser stayed in the second chase group and kept tabs on Stevic, while Health Net teammate Mike Sayers (USA, Health Net) bridged up to the break and helped Ollerenshaw cross the line with both the stage and GC wins.

In the women’s race Kristin Armstrong (USA, T-Mobile) grabbed victory in the stage and the GC. Erinne Willock (CAN, Webcor) was the top Canadian with a seventh-place finish in the Fort Ord stage, which put her in ninth place overall. Canada’s Audrey Lemieux (CAN, Quark) placed 28th in the stage and the GC.
