April 16, 2004 – Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile) and Hayden Godfrey (Health Net/Maxxis) clocked the fastest time trials of the day. The women's field is being contested by some of North America's top teams as T-Mobile, Genesis, and Victory Brewing all had riders in the top-five of today's time trial. HealthNet/Maxxis, Sierra Nevada, and Webcor dominated the first stage in the men's race.
The elite men and women began the Sea Otter Classic on the Laguna Seca Raceway. The time trial started down a steep corkscrew descent and then into a 180-degree turn, with a 500-metre straightway to the finish line, totaling 2.72km. Many cyclists were having difficulty deciding whether or not to use their time trial bikes due to the technical course and the strong winds.
