June 09, 2014 – This is what mountain bike dreams are made of! Gorgeous sun, swimable lakes and perfect trail conditions for Ontario Cup #3 at Sir Sam’s Ski and Bike!  The heat of Saturday gave way to a hazy Sunday, perfect for racing the series’ most exciting race course!

A fresh change to the series featured an Eliminator race Saturday, with the open categories won respectively by Peter Disera of Norco Factory Team and Paige Foxcroft of Angry Johnny’s Cycle Solutions.  Special thanks to Angry Johnny, Glenn Meeuwisse and Al Hawley for volunteering their time running this cool event, and to Sir Sam’s for opening up their carpet to the top!

Weekend festivities included over 100 riders attending the banquet Saturday Night at the lodge, and the event is a real celebration of the sport with everyone staying nearby and enjoying the entire experience.

Sunday’s race was well attended for a peripheral event with 400 riders taking to the hills of the most spectator friendly course of the series.  A top-notch group of riders took honours in our coveted top categories, with Mitch Bailey of Trek Canada taking the win in Elite Men. Nipping at his heals was last year’s world Junior silver medalist Peter Disera of Norco Factory team, while the wily veteran Andrew Watson also of Norco Factory team took third place honours.

A strong Elite Women’s field featured a first-ever Ontario Cup win for the affable Mandy Dreyer of Tuf Rack race team!  Coming in second with a strong effort was Karlee Gendron of Trek Canada, while third spot went to Elyse Nieuwold of Team Spoke-o-motion.  The  Female/Male Junior Expert wins were taken by Soren Meeuwisse of Trek Canada and Quinton Disera of Angry Johnny’s/Cycle Solutions respectively.

It was great to have strong representation from the Series’ title sponsor, Scott Bicycles.  In addition to hosting the World Cup 3rox Racing team, we enjoyed representation from Paul, Nicole, Andrew and Wes all from Scott Canada!

While points are awarded at both the Sudbury Canada Cup and Nationals at Hardwood, the next stop on the series is in Midland at Mountainview Ski Club.  A brand new course awaits, while we are excited to host a Saturday “retro” race – One lap of the course on the oldest equipment you can find!  A free ride with some cool prizes for a variety of categories, none of which are based on speed!  We look forward to seeing you all at the Sudbury Canada Cup!
