April 22, 2013 (Regina/Saskatoon, SK) – The Saskatchewan Cycling Association awarded trophies to its top volunteers during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Sunday, April 21 in Regina and via video conference in Saskatoon.
Janice Matus, of Saskatoon, received Outstanding Volunteer in the Road Sector, awarded for outstanding contribution in the Road Racing, Track or Cyclo-Cross sector. Over the past few years, Janice has put in countless hours commissairing at many road and cross events, and has been the organizer of the Bikes on Broadway Stage Race in Saskatoon. She’s so very helpful to all of the cyclists and keeps her cool in all kinds of situations (and there have been some strange ones).
Garth Patterson, of Saskatoon, won Outstanding Volunteer in the Recreation and Transportation Sector.
There are not enough words to describe the impact that Garth Patterson has had on riding in Saskatoon. His boundless energy is inspiring and our trails have never looked so good. Over the past several years, Garth has undertaken some very large trail building and restoration projects. As well, he is always present during our trail maintenance days and often spends time on trails when no one else seems to have the time. This is truly the work of a retiree, and yet, Garth is still working full time, raising a family, renovating his house, and keeping in great shape!
Bob Cochran, of Regina, received the President’s Award, recognizing outstanding volunteer contribution toward the overall development or progress of the SCA and can only be received once in a life time. This contribution may include development of a club, sector, committee, event, athlete or team.
Bob is a long term volunteer with both the SCA and with the Wascana Freewheelers, of which he was president of from 1998-2003. He started in the SCA as the Education Co-ordinator in 1997 and transitioned into the Vice President of Recreation and Transportation for the past 14 years. As his roll of VP he has chaired the very successful Great Annual Sask Pedal (GASP), previously named Sask Bike Festival. In addition to his VP duties, Bob is a National Examiner of Can-Bike and facilitates the Can-Bike 2 courses in Saskatchewan. Thank Bob, for your many years of dedication; your award is well deserved!

More awards will be presented over the season as the SCA will honor our volunteers and top achieves at different venues.
