December 30, 2010 (Burnaby, BC) – The Elite women put on a great show for spectators on the third night of racing at the Saputo Burnaby-4. The surprise story of the evening was an exciting win by Junior rider Jasmin Gleasser (Team BC) in the women’s Elimination race. The usually dominant Sarah Hammer (USA) Team Ouch was out early and successive eliminations brought the race down to five riders, Gleasser, Jennie Ried (Fanatik Bike Co), Tara Whitten (Velocity Cycling Club), Jean Anne Berkenpass (Local Ride) and Steph Roorda (Incycle).
Berkenpass was the next to be eliminated, followed by Roorda. Gleasser attacked before the next elimination, Whitten responded, and the two dropped Reid who was subsequently eliminated. The final lap between Gleasser and Whitten was a tactical one where Gleasser rode up the track keeping Whitten above her, and then attacked, dropping down to the sprinter’s lane, holding on to take the win.
“I knew if she attacked, I wouldn’t be able to get around her,” said Gleasser. “So I took it up high and made sure I used the track.”
With 20 laps to go in the women’s UCI 50 lap Scratch race, Jenny Lehmann (team BC) and Morgan Cabot (Glotman-Simpson) found themselves at the front of the race with a gap behind them. The pair began working together, distancing themselves from the complacent field. Rachel Canning (Local Ride) joined the two, and the three continued to widen their lead.
“I was at the front right after Jenny and Morgan got that gap, and no one was doing anything, so I just bridged up,” said Canning.
With seven laps to go, Gleasser reacted, but could not separate from the pack. With five laps to go Whitten attacked, but also failed to get away. Finally, Hammer attacked with three laps to go, and blazed past the break of three to take the win. At the line the hard-charging field swarmed the break and Pascale Schnider (Switzerland) and Joanne Keisanowski (TIBCO to the Top) picked up second and third, while Canning held on to fourth and Whitten was fifth.
The Elite women’s UCI 100-lap points race got off to a roaring start, and never slowed down. The pro riders raced hard, and less experienced local racers held their own and picked up points. Cari Higgins (Peanut Butter Co/2012) attacked and took a lap on the field inside the first 12 laps.
“I had nothing to lose tonight,” said Higgins, “It’s fun to be able to race with that attitude.”
Next, Hammer and Schnider each took a lap on the field mid-race. World Champion points racer Whitten cruised off the front and picked up a lap on the field late in the race as the crowd cheered her on. Hammer won by a five-point margin over Schnider followed by Whitten, with Higgins and Keisanowski in 4th and 5th respectively.
This was the final GC event for Elite women, who will return on Thursday to race a separate non-UCI Omnium. Sarah Hammer took the overall with a total of 159 GC points, followed by Whitten with 142 points, and Schnider with 136.
“A bunch of us were all racing the world cup together, so it’s great training to get up here and do this again. I signed up as soon as I heard Tara was racing – she’s the best in the world,” commented Hammer.
Elite Men
The Elite men got things rolling with a 75-lap scratch race. Late in the race, Ryan Aitcheson (Pedal) and Colby Pearce (Saputo) broke away together, and stayed away for multiple laps while being chased by Christian Meier (Garmin), Svein Tuft (Haywood), Jackie Simes (Hayman’s) and Ian Moir (TrainerMic).
With three laps to go the chase was closing in rapidly, and Pearce was caught by the chase group. This was the end of the race for Aitcheson, exhausted from the huge effort to stay away with Pearce. Simes accelerated on the bell lap, Moir responded and the two gapped the rest of the group.
Through the last turn to the line, Moir accelerated over Simes and took the win. “I was like ‘conserve, conserve, conserve – don’t jump early’ all race,” said Moir, “And then I was in a good spot – second wheel – so I went for it.” Tuft took third ahead of Pearce, then Meier.
The men’s Elimination race whittled down to a crowd-pleasing final sprint between Garmin-Transition’s Tyler Farrar and Saputo’s Daniel Holloway. Farrar took the win, delighting cheering fans. Hayman’s Bobby Lea was third, RTL’s Kit Karzen fourth, and Haywood’s Zach Bell fifth.
Then Haywood’s Bell and Tuft lit things up on the track, winning the two final events – an elimination Madison, and an UCI 125-lap 5×25 Madison.
The elimination Madison went down to Haywood’s Bell and Tuft up against Saputo’s Pearce and Holloway. Tuft relayed to Bell as trailed behind Pearce for the final two laps, but Bell charged hard, coming over Pearce to take the win. Jason Allen and Jame Carney (R&B) were third, Meier and Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) fourth, and RTL’s Colt Peterson and Kit Karzen placed fifth.
The final 125-lap Madison 5×25, and only UCI race of the evening for the men, was similarly decided when Tuft powered across the line ahead of Saputo’s Holloway. Team Hayman picked up second, Garmin-Transitions was third, Saputo fourth, and it was another fifth place finish for team TrainerMic. The two wins by the Haywood pair were impressive but not enough to overtake Saputo in the final standings.
Saputo’s Holloway and Pearce claimed the overall, with Haywod’s Bell and Tuft in second, and TrainerMic’s Moir and Danny Heeley in third. The men return on the final day for a non-UCI Omnium.
