December 29, 2010 (Burnaby, BC) – The second night of racing got underway at the Saputo Burnaby-4 with world famous trials rider Ryan Leech and his team putting on an impressive show between events in the in-field. The stillness and precision of the trials riding provided a perfect contrast to the high speed, frenetic Madison racing by the Elite Men.
Elite Women
American Sarah Hammer (Ouch) continued to dominate the Elite Women’s category for the first two of the three races on the agenda for Day Two. The women opened their evening with an Antioquena race, a race format that the Canadian National team picked up while racing at an invitational track race in Columbia. Antioquena is named after the Columbian state where the race originated and is a mix of Elimination and Points racing.
On each bell lap the first rider across the line wins a point and the last rider across the line is eliminated until the field is reduced to five riders. Surviving the elimination rounds and going on to the scratch race were Sarah Hammer (Ouch), Tara Whitten (Velocity Cycling Club), Pascale Schnider (Switzerland), Jasmine Gleasser (Team BC) , and Cari Higgins (Peanut Butter Co/2012). In the end Hammer was not to be denied again winning the race, followed by Schnider, Gleasser, Whitten, then Higgins.
The second Elite women’s event of the evening was their only UCI race – a 100-lap 10×10 Points race – which was exciting and aggressive, with less experienced riders getting into the mix and picking up points. Mid-race Hammer went off the front to lap the field with Whitten and Schnider working together to chase her down. They succeeded putting Whitten and Schnider in a tight battle for the lead.
Then late in the race Whitten was involved in a crash, and Hammer attacked, taking another lap on the field while Whitten was out. She re-joined the race and continued battling for points with Schnider, but ultimately it was Hammer, now up one lap on them, who won the race. Schnider took the final sprint for second as Whitten settled for third. Higgins and Joanne Keisanowski (TIBCO to the Top) were fourth and fifth respectively.
“I was racing a bit smarter than yesterday – I was trying to conserve,” commented Whitten. Meanwhile Schnider was happy with second. “The race was really fast,” she said post-race. “I was lucky to get that last sprint.”
At the end of the evening, Whitten upset Hammer’s winning streak in the 75-lap scratch race – the final event for Elite Women on Day 2 of racing. “It’s a nice way to end the evening,” said Whitten, who came away from her points race crash with a 20cm piece of the track lodged in her skin suit. Hammer settled for second place, Schnider was third, Gleasser place fourth, and Higgins was fifth.
Hammer continues to lead overall with 117 points followed by Whitten with 97 and Schnider with 91.
Elite Men
The Elite Men kicked off their second night of racing with a 60-lap 5×12 super sprint Madison. The race was fast, aggressive, and not dominated by any one team. Jason Allen took the final sprint, ultimately winning the race for team R&B with team mate James Carney with 14 points, edging out Saputo’s Colby Pearce and Daniel Holloway, who earned a very respectable 2nd place finish given a crash late in the race involving Pearce, Team Hayman’s Jackie Simes, and Kit Karzen from team RTL.
Simes and partner Bobby Lea picked up third despite the former’s crash. Garmin’s Christian Meier and Tyler Farrar were fourth, and team TrainerMic picked up fifth, making this a hat trick of Madison fifths for Ian Moir and Danny Heeley at the Burnaby-4.
With too many riders for the originally scheduled 75-lap scratch race, the Elite men voted to change the race to a 100-lap 5×20 Madison. The only UCI-race for the Pro/Elite men on day two, this proved to be an exciting event as Haywood’s Tuft and Bell put up an aggressive fight for points against Saputo’s Pearce and Holloway who won the race picking up their third Madison victory of the series. Bell and Tuft settling for second and R&B’s Carney and Allen were up third.
The third race of the evening for the Elite Men was an unusual Elimination to 40-lap Scratch Madison race. This format was a first for Canadian Olympian Zach Bell (Haywood) who was eliminated.
“It’s confusing out there,” commented Bell. “Usually in an elimination race you can time your run at the back, but with the Madison going on, you risk splitting an exchange”.
“Nationals in 2008 was the last time I raced track,” said Bell’s race partner Tuft. “This time of year I’m mainly cross-country skiing and doing other stuff like that – it’s hard to be track fit at this time of year. That’s why you need a 4-day.”
Tuft and Bell were not alone in failing to make the scratch race – all the top teams were eliminated. “I guess some of us try to play the devil – stay at the back, to try and save energy, and it back fired,” commented Holloway on why the top teams were all eliminated. “I guess some of us wanted to save energy for some of the longer races. But it gives the younger guys a good opportunity.”
Capitalizing on that opportunity were Team BCIT’s Jacob Schwingboth and Cam MacKinnon, who came away with the win. “I guess the big teams were focusing on recovery,” said Schwingboth. “And that gave us an opportunity for glory!”
The Final Elite Men’s race was a 160-lap 8×20 Madison. Garmin’s Christian Meier and Tyler Farrar delivered the performance that Argyle Armada fans were hoping for, leading the points for the whole race, and taking the win.
“We’re having fun out there,” said Farrar. “This isn’t exactly our forte, but to win a race is pretty cool, and we’re definitely getting the training we’re looking for.”
Pearce and Holloway of Team Saputo picked up second, followed by Haywood’s Tuft and Bell, R&B’s Allen and Carney, and Hayman’s Simes and Lea rounded out the top five.
