Santos Tour Down Under Stage 5 Report, Full Results, Photos – Porte in Charge, Canada’s Boivin 89th

by pedalmag.com

January 25, 2014 (Willunga Hill, Australia) – Australian Richie Porte has climbed to victory atop of Willunga Hill, winning Friday’s Pure Blonde 151.5km Stage 5 beginning in McLaren Vale! Turning into the very last climb of the day, it was almost a carbon copy of Thursday’s Corkscrew hill as Porte battled it out with Cadel Evans and Simon Gerrans early in the climb.

But this time, it was Porte who broke and showed his power as a climber, moving well clear of Evans and Gerrans to win the stage in a very convincing fashion. Gerrans finished third, behind Diego Ulissi, giving him just enough of a time bonus to take back the Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey by 1 second, ahead of Cadel Evans.

Today’s result in the General Classification means that tomorrow’s final stage of the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under will be an absolute thriller in deciding who will be this year’s champion

The riders swap lycra for tuxedos at tonight’s Legends’ Night Dinner
Cycling rolls out the red carpet tonight as Nespresso presents the Legends’ Night Dinner, a night designed to celebrate the sport, the personalities and the legends.

The event will honour one of the most decorated track cyclists in history, Sir Chris Hoy. His achievements, including 6 Olympic Gold Medals, see him as the most successful Olympic Male Cyclist of all time.

Crowd favourite German cyclist Jens Voigt’s contribution to cycling and the Santos Tour Down Under will also be recognised on the night. At 42 years old, and the oldest rider in the peloton, this week has been Voigt’s 11th appearance at the Santos Tour Down Under.

Joining Hoy and Voigt is Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, who will share tales from his remarkable cycling career.

The 2014 Santos Tour Down Under title comes down to the last day
Tomorrow’s Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6 will decide who wins the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under. ORICA GreenEDGE’s Simon Gerrans will wear the Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey, with a 1-second lead over BMC’s Cadel Evans.

A new city circuit will see the world’s best cyclists race through the CBD and along King William, Pirie, Flinders and Wakefield streets. With big screens to show the action as it happens, enjoy the atmosphere as the overall race winner is decided.

The race starts at 12.30 and is expected to finish at approximately 2.30pm. Presentation of the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under winner, as well as the various jersey winners, will take place immediately after the stage presentations.
