September 20, 2006 (Salzburg, Austria) — Belgian Dominique Cornu won the men’s under-23 time trial by a massive 37 seconds over defending champion Mikhail Ignatiev (Russia). Frenchman Jerome Coppel was third, 45 seconds behind Cornu’s winning effort of 49min 28sec.
Cornu, 21, set the fastest split times over the hilly 39-km course to post an average speed of 47.9km/h. The severity of the climbs put paid to many a favourite’s hopes, Lars Boom (Holland) and Maxim Belkov just two who finished outside of the top ten.
The Canadians found themselves slightly off the blistering pace set by Cornu. Brad Fairall was 43rd out of the 61 starters with a time of 53min 36sec. Teammate David Veilleux was 50th, recording 54min 28sec.
Unluckiest rider was Chris Froome of Kenya who mistook the signals of a race volunteer in the opening metres and piled into the hapless helper. More embarrassed than anything, Froome quickly remounted
and finished in 36th postion, 3min and 32sec behind Cornu.
“I was confident that I could do fine and hit the podium,” said Cornu, who turns professional next year, “but I didn’t think I could win. I still can’t believe I did.”
